Kit as a Girls name?

mondayGinaB · 05/06/2022 22:15

how do you feel about Kit as a first name for a girl? I know it’s considered unisex but i’d love to know y’all’s thoughts on it!

Is it unisex? I think of it as a boy's name. Diminutive of Christopher.

It seems as if its more prominent as a boys name but on several sites i looked at before creating this post said the name was unisex, so that’s where i got it. i’m not sure if it’s widely considered unisex though

As a nn for Kitty?

yes or as a stand-alone nickname type first name. If I were to name my child this i wouldn’t pick Catharine/Katherine though as i don’t particularly like that name for my family. but i’m loving the name kitty/kit!

Kit is the name of David Hasselhoffs nightrider car from the 1980's- which was presumably male! Not a little girls name and never heard is as unisex. Are you in the US, hence using the term y'alls???

yes i am in the US! I believe that in the US it is considered Unisex as on multiple sites I looked at it said a boy or girls name. it is definitely most widely used as a nickname although i quite like Kit/Kitty as a standalone!

I too had an Aunty Kit. I think it was short for Kathleen but she never used her full name

TheGirlOnTheDragon · 06/06/2022 05:14

yes i am in the US!

Ah. Ok. Then pick whatever bonkers thing you want to, we can't help you judge! I mean people in the US name their children things such as Randy or Johnson as a first name. 🤣🤣

I don't think they'll ever - truly - grasp English. 😆

Dalekjastninerels · 06/06/2022 05:25

Name the baby Katherine, then call her Kit if you really want to.

Footle · 06/06/2022 05:41

@TheGirlOnTheDragon , what a rude, narrow-minded post. I've reported it.

FearlessFreddie · 06/06/2022 05:46

In the UK it’s a boy’s name. A nice nn for Catherine though.

esoryelneh · 06/06/2022 07:26

Love it as a stand alone name for a girl!

What a stupid, ignorant and discriminatory post.

The US is not the UK. Nor do they want to be. They have their own popular names that have evolved over the centuries, and their own variation of English. They are not trying to ‘grasp’ any of that from us, and why would they?

There are plenty of stupid names here!

SmellsLikeMiddleAgeSpirit · 06/06/2022 07:44

Sorry, OP, I should have added… I like Kit for a girl if it’s a diminutive of something… but am less keen if it is a stand-alone name.

Twizbe · 06/06/2022 07:46

I went to uni with a female Kit. Just Kit, not short for anything.

She was a lovely woman. It wasn't until recently that I even knew Kit was traditionally male.

Go for it.

pinklavenders · 06/06/2022 07:53

I know only female Kits.

It could be short for Katherine or Kitty. But I could also be standalone.

KittyKitten/Kit sounds very feminine.

Dalekjastninerels · 06/06/2022 08:01

Kitten sounds like a stripper.

Kitty/Kit ok as short forms of Katherine/Kathleen- but notas names in themselves.

Dalekjastninerels · 06/06/2022 08:02

not as

I can't type for💩

SoupDragon · 06/06/2022 08:04

I don't think they'll ever - truly - grasp English. 😆

Much the same as some people are unable to grasp American English.

TheLadyDIdGood · 06/06/2022 08:06

I just think of sports kit so it's not something I'd name by baby as a full name. It's OK as a nick name but not as a standalone, it seems too casual and incomplete. Giving a longer name with a shorter nn gives your child lots of options for later on in life.

LuckyCharm9 · 06/06/2022 08:25

I have a friend named Nikita, we all call her Kit.

Well, if we hadn’t colonised the entire nation pretty much, they wouldn’t have to truly-grasp English now would they?

Kitty is a diminutive of Katherine-why would you want a diminutive of a diminutive as a standalone name?

ChagSameachDoreen · 06/06/2022 12:33

It's a bit try hard. I put it in the same category as Tess and Joss.

KimikosNightmare · 06/06/2022 12:35

LuckyCharm9 · 06/06/2022 08:25

I have a friend named Nikita, we all call her Kit.

Nikita as a girl's name really and irrationally annoys me. I'm old enough to remember Nikita Khrushchev. It's just not a woman's name.

I first came across Nikita as a girl's name in the film ^La Femme Nikita" (which also annoys me for Luc Besson casting his wife Ann Parillaud in a role she was far too old for)

Heckythump1 · 06/06/2022 12:37

I would assume it was a boy tbh. Love Kitty though!
