I’d say Scout is a girls name.

stuntbubbles · 30/05/2022 09:59

I’d capitalise them all for starters!

I agree, Scout is a girl’s name. Ottilie is more usually spelled with a single L. I prefer the Maximilien or Maximilian spelling to your version.

I like all the girls’ names except Mabel and Ginny. But I’d start crossing out now the ones your partner doesn’t like – no sense getting attached to a name you’re never going to agree on!

toastofthetown · 30/05/2022 10:03

alba - fine, don’t love it, don’t hate it
violet - it’s fine, popular though
ottillie - only seen it spelt Ottilie and it don’t love it. Feels very trendy to me
matilda - starting to feel a touch dated to me
orla - fine, don’t love it, don’t hate it
martha - it’s quite nice
daisy - very popular and too twee for my taste
meredith - fine, don’t love it, don’t hate it
camille - dislike Camille, love Camilla though
mabel - very trendy at the moment. Think this one will date
ginny - think of the Harry Potter character (and I don’t like Ginny Weasley so not a good association for me)
clover - not popular on MN but I quite like. It’s a bit bovine, but that doesn’t really bother me

otis - very very trendy
finneas - prefer the Phineas spelling. There are a lot of Finns and Finleys around though
jonah - like Jonah
spencer - don’t like Spencer
felix - like Felix, though it’s popular at the moment
rex - it’s ok, rising hugely in popularity though
wilbur - quite nice
luka - prefer the Luca spelling and so popular right now
scout - I’d assume a Scout was a girl, but I don’t like it for either sex
maximillion - Maximilian is the spelling I’m familiar with, but I don’t like any Max names

SneezesHaveStarted · 30/05/2022 10:05

Ginisatonic · 30/05/2022 10:15

I like Violet, Otis and Jonah but see none of these have made your husband's list.
Of those left I like Max but only the shortened version. Lots of people on here of course would be horrified at a ‘nickname’ on the birth certificate.

KirstenBlest · 30/05/2022 10:21

Congratulations and best wishes.

alba - Scotland, cheap hi-fi from the 1980s
violet - ok

meredith - horrible
camille - ok
mabel - not keen

matilda - nice
orla - not unless your Irish
martha - love it
daisy - bit twee
meredith - love it
camille - boys' name - how about Camilla
mabel - love it
ginny - nn for Virginia usually
clover - OK

otis - no
finneas - no, but I like Finn. Should be Phineas anyway
jonah - no - reminds me of "and the whale"
spencer - no
felix - love it
rex - love it
wilbur - no
luka - Luca is better
scout - usually a girs's name, but no either way
maximillion - I like Max, but not Maximillion

pamshortsbrokenbothherlegs · 30/05/2022 10:34

I like:

Alba
Matilda
Martha
Mabel

Jonah
Wilbur
Luca

larkstar · 30/05/2022 10:45

orla
camille (I know it can and is used for both male and female but the only one I immediately think of is Camille Pissarro - French impressionist painter)

are nice enough - not stirred much by any of the others.

Luluuuuuuuuuu85 · 30/05/2022 10:50

Orla and Max for me!

Ouchmytoe100 · 30/05/2022 11:43

alba - like it, it's ancient and beautiful, but lots of people say it makes them think of the cheap electronics brand when it's mentioned on Mumsnet usually
violet - very pretty but becoming overdone
ottillie - I find this name ridiculous and faddy
matilda- very pretty but becoming overdone
orla - pretty but a little dull
martha - adore Martha
daisy - love Daisy, so fresh and cool
meredith - surprised myself by really liking this name. A bit different but very soft, pretty sound
camille - it's pretty but not my favourit
mabel - Mabel is cute and cool
ginny - Nice but nickname-y
clover - nice but a bit cow-ish

otis - reminds me of aardvarks for some reason. Was there an aardvark with this name on TV at some point in my childhood?
finneas - ADORE Phineas, Finneas is a misspelling and I hate it
jonah - Love Jonah, so cool
spencer - I know a Spencer nicknamed Spenny which has put me off the name for like
felix - Love Felix
rex - sorry are you having a baby or a dog?
wilbur - cute but a pig's name
luka - boring and overdone
scout - Its a girls nickname! You can't use it for a boy
Maximilian - it's okay but you spelled it wrong so maybe shouldn't use it 😂 it's not just you, the spelling is so long and fussy. Autocorrect fixed it for me.

I'd choose:
Martha Daisy
Mabel Violet
Meredith Camille

Jonah, Felix or Phineas for boys.

DogsAndGin · 30/05/2022 11:48

alba - no
violet - lovely
ottillie - love it
matilda - it’s okay
orla - no
martha - dreary
daisy - daft
meredith - old lady name but I like it
camille - 1980s
mabel - it’s ok
ginny - nice, as a nickname
clover - quite like it

otis - yes
finneas - no
jonah - it’s ok
spencer - surname
felix - cat
rex - T-rex
wilbur - absolutely no
luka - pretentious
scout - too American and sounds like a girls name to me
maximillion - too long and fussy

Mymoneydontjigglejiggle · 30/05/2022 11:49

From your reduced list, I'd pick Spencer and Camille.

DogsAndGin · 30/05/2022 11:49

Ottilie and Otis are my faves from your list

Hadtocomment · 30/05/2022 12:17

I quite like Mabel and Martha. I also like Maeve which doesn't have the same vintage thing but seems really nice sound and similarly unfrilly.

I like Ginny which you don't see on here much. Is it short for something? Virginia or Genevieve? I like Violet but seems to be on here a lot so seems popular. I don't really get the Otillie thing. Which is a name Ive only really heard lots on this forum so it seems like a very sudden or particular spike or craze but I could be wrong.

Camille is ok. Quite elegant for a grown up. I think I prefer Cecile to Camille but not sure why. Seems a very different style of name to Mabel though!

of the boys names I don't know. Jonah and Max are nice.

Mabel or Camile. Spencer or Maximilian.

Órla seems to be doing the rounds on Mumsnet right now. It will end up faddy (unless you're Irish.)

YukoandHiro · 30/05/2022 13:06

Martha and Jonah are my top.

I do like Alba for a girl

thefarrierswife · 30/05/2022 16:23

clover - not sure it would suit an adult

User6761 · 30/05/2022 20:03

Of your shortened list, I like all the girls names except for Mabel.

Not so keen on your boys names. I don't like Spencer at all. Rex makes me think of dinosaurs. I like Max but not Maximilian. I do like the French name Maxime though.
