DH and I both like the name Myra, but we are worried about the association with Myra Hindley, do you think it is possible to use it?
Or should we think about Mayra instead?

As an aside, I really like Lyra, but DH says it makes him think of Lycra… 🙄

I personally don't think any dc should have such a significantly negative name.

I think most people would see past it once they knew your child - as with any name, however awful - but I would also imagine most adults would associate it Myra Hindley at first. Depends on whether you mind people thinking of her when they hear your DD’s name. Wouldn’t be for me…!

I wouldn’t use it. I wouldn’t want my child’s name to be associated with something so awful, and for that thought to cross the mind of everyone she introduces herself to.

I don’t like Mayra either. I’m not sure how you would want it to be pronounced and I’d don’t like either way I would think of.

What about Mara? I’ve never heard it in real life but it’s the name of Jonathan Rhys Meyers’ wife (the actor) and I thought it was so beautiful the first time I saw it

I wouldn't even think 'oh what a beautiful name, shame it's connected with such a notorious person'. It's ugly. To me. Other people might disagree of course.

This was my mil name and she hated it because of its association. People commented on it A LOT.

I think it's a beautiful name. Not based in UK & didn't automatically make the connection with Hindley.
In Ireland, we have a similar sounding name, but it's spelt - Máire. (not Maree)
