I like the meaning of foliage and I pronounce it FILL-iss, therefore I like the name. Is that correct. I also love Felicity with nickname Fliss and Lissy.

Yes, that's how I'd pronounce it. Isn't it short for Philomena?

It's Greek name, but not from Philomena

There's a 95 year old Phyllis in my family. In her case it is short for Philomena.

WilsonMilson · 22/05/2022 11:38

I’d pronounce it Fill-Liss too, I don’t know how else you could pronounce it.
Phyllis seems very dated and old lady though. The syphilis connection is also obvious. Felicity is nice, much younger and more fresh, and nicer nicknames like Fliss as you say.

Sunbird24 · 22/05/2022 11:38

Makes me think of Nurse Crane in Call the Midwife, and cape gooseberries (I know they’re physalis, but still linked in my head). I like it.

TeenPlusCat · 22/05/2022 11:40

You have correct pronunciation, it was my DGM's name born 1900-ish.

Iamthewombat · 22/05/2022 11:42

For the love of god, do not call your baby Phyllis!

Insomniacsrule · 22/05/2022 11:42

I pronounce it Fillis, but to me it sounds very old fashioned. I prefer Felicity.

axolotlfloof · 22/05/2022 11:44

I would go with Felicity.

Oizys · 22/05/2022 11:46

Correct pronunciation but I think it’s a fairly old fashioned name (although if you love it that shouldn’t stop you!)

id go with felicity personally I really like that and Fliss as a nickname. DH vetoed it for us

TuTuLemon · 22/05/2022 11:47

Yes I pronounce it Fill-is but all it makes me think of is syphilis.

CaptainMyCaptain · 22/05/2022 11:47

Fillis - it was my Aunt's name.

PinkestMoon · 22/05/2022 11:48

This was my Nana's name. It's Fill-iss. She used to go by Phil for short, before boys names on girls was cool!

MolkosTeenageAngst · 22/05/2022 11:54

Phil-iss. Can’t think that there’s any other way to pronounce it? It is an old fashioned name but it seems they are coming back into fashion so if you like it that shouldn’t put you off.

Fliss and Lissy work as nicknames for Felicity and Phyllis.

pinklavendar · 22/05/2022 12:03

I know a Phyllis and in her case it's short for Philomena. I another who gets called Phyl, which I like

Kitty1342 · 22/05/2022 12:04

Phil-iss

Favouritefruits · 22/05/2022 12:05

Phil-Liss

MysticCT · 22/05/2022 12:13

It makes me think of Phyllis Pearce, a character from Coronation Street.

How would you pronounce Phyllis?
Random789 · 22/05/2022 12:15

Just found this via Google, which is sweet: "In Greek mythology, Phyllis dies for love, then is transformed into an almond tree."

So a good name if ypu like almonds.

I'd certainly pronounce it FILL-iss.

I wouldn't let the syphillis thing put you off. There are a million hideous illnesses that sound like girls names. Wasn't there a Gonorrhea in Macbeth?Grin

orangeisthenewpuce · 22/05/2022 12:43

Fill-liss there is no other way to pronounce it. Makes me think of Phyllis off coronation street. (A long time ago)

The ultimate Phyllis

Libre2 · 22/05/2022 12:54

I love, love, love the name Phyllis. I really wanted it for DD but was over-ruled by DH sadly. I have loved it ever since I read The Railyway Children and it was my DGM’s
middle name.

ChessieFL · 22/05/2022 13:00

@Random789 you’re thinking of Goneril who was in King Lear!
