Keeping gender a surprise for DC3.
For a boy we both like Phoenix
and for a girl we like Kai, Indie.
But both feel like these are both quite out there and would be open to some more traditional names but not so much that there’d be others in their class with the same name.
Please leave us some suggestions!

Well, Indie is very mainstream, so that doesn’t really fit. Kai is a boys’ name.

Kaia, Gaia, Zelda, Xenia -all not common but are proper names.

Phoenix is a bit cheesy, to me.
Zander (Alexander), Felix, Hector, Magnus.

I dont think kai is out there at all. Although i know it as a teenagers name so it might be that there wont be many your child’s age as maybe that trend is over. But it is a boys name. Indie definitely isnt ‘out there’.

have you looked at the national statistics website for the past few years?

I immediately thought of Phoebe when I saw your children's names and then saw you liked Phoenix for a boy.

Indie is lovely and not too out there I don't think.

RuthW · 22/05/2022 10:41

Phoenix is a girl's name and Kai is a boy's name to me.

pinklavenders · 22/05/2022 14:04

Phoenix is a boys name imo and I only know boys called it. It sounds very masculine imo

pinklavenders · 22/05/2022 14:05

Kai could be short for Kailana

Jax and Hallie are v popular, as is Indie - they are similarly modern / invented names to me. They go together fine. Zara is another. Carys, Lois, Jocelyn, Aislinn, Ffion, Seren, Cara, Catrin, Sylvie, Juno, all sound like they might go and are more traditional.

Kai and Phoenix I think have a bit of a rep, so perhaps something like Dylan, Dexter, Nico, Nathan, Jerome, Silas, Seth, Guy, Blaise, Finlay, Rafferty, Leon, Franklin might be better

Nothing wrong with an out there name, though I think Kai and Indie are pretty mainstream these days :)

ignore jax on there btw, that's my own list haha, I will be adding hallie to mine though!

I've only ever come across Kai as a boy's name? Alternatives for girls:
Kiki, Kaia, Kyla, Kyra, Keira, Keziah, Kendra

I like Indie but would only use a nickname for India. I also met an Indiana once but, although that sounds feminine, I could only think 'Indiana Jones'!

I was friends with a very cool Phoenix when I was at stage school. Outrageous character (think he's a drag queen now, actually!) and the name really suited him. I'm not sure you could have a shy, introverted Phoenix ...

I don't know about traditional because Jax and Hallie aren't that traditional to me, though I like both. As a middle ground between traditional and modern/cool, how about:

Astrid, Autumn, Ariel, Avril, Bronte, Blair, Cleo, Cora, Cassidy, Calista, Delphi, Danica, Darcey, Ebony, Erica, Effie, Etta, Enya, Frankie, Genesis, Giselle, Gloria, Hebe, Hazel, Inez, Ida, Jacinta, Jocelyn, Josie, Kristen, Katy, Larissa, Liora, Livia, Lyra, Luna, Maeve, Misty, Mara, Mika, Mala, Nova, Nyah, Nyla, Nesta, Opal, Paige, Posy, Pearl, Piper, Quinn, Romy, Remy, Rosina, Robina, Rowena, Rivkah, Ramona, Reese, Saffron, Sadie, Savannah, Sabrina, Saskia, Sydney, Thea, Tamara, Taryn, Tessa, Verity, Veda, Vashti, Wren, Winter, Xanthe, Zia, Zeryn, Zadie, Zillah

Arlo, Asher, Alban, Aulay, Alby, Artie, Brynn, Cole, Colby, Cory, Conor, Callum, Chase, Dexter, Damien, Devon, Ellis, Elliot, Evan, Flynn, Fitch, Finn, Hunter, Harley, Inigo, Jesse, Jude, Jasper, Jared, Jethro, Jordan, Kit, Kester, Logan, London, Milo, Morgan, Mason, Nico, Owen, Orson, Preston, Parker, Rory, Reece, Solly, Silas, Seth, Tian, Talon, Tyler, Vinnie, Wilkie, Wilson, Zeke
