If only dads named babies....

Came across an old thread on baby names husbands/partners had suggested. A common theme seemed to be men suggesting really dated names, like those of school friends/work colleagues, or really out there names of comic book characters. Got me wondering what names would be in the top 10 if only dads were allowed a say in the naming....

To get us started, my DP thought Mark or Steven was the perfect choice for our son born in 2021! Good, solid names he said 😂

My father would've name me and my sibling Noah and Daisy in the 90s. Not bad but certainly wouldn't suit us.

Now he constantly suggests John or Paul for our children 😂

I was born in 1973, and my mother said if I had been a boy, I still wouldn't have a name. They could not agree on a boy's name, not in any way, shape or form. My mother said she liked Matthew, Jonathan and Christopher. The only name my father liked was Kirk. I still get a kick from my mother's look of disgust when she says that name. 🤣

I love this! Gary and Churchill! 😂

@Aquamarine1029 sorry quote fail! I mean to quote @SurpriseSurprise

My ex is John. His dad was John. He wanted our son (born 2014) to be called John. When I vetoed that he chose "Mark". Mark is his best friend.

So I chose a name (classic, fairly common but sturdy and easily shortened if wanted) and got his mum and sisters to agree with me so we ganged up on him and my son was given the classic name 😂

DH told everyone on FB DD was called Padme, as in Princess Leia and Luke Skywalker's mom.

Worryingly lots of people believed him and it took quite some time for her real name to filter through.

If we’d had a boy, my husband wanted Percy. After the Laura ashley wallpaper in the spare room.

We had girls.

NoddingTulip · 18/05/2022 08:45

DH liked Gaius, Horatio and Rupert for boys and Athena and Cecily for girls. I couldn't tell if he was taking the piss or being serious (I don't mind Cecily though).

DH is obsessed with American names like Travis and Seth. I don't hate them but they just remind me of some greasy skater dude from a 90's film like Clueless!

MIL is worse. She suggested Helen or Robert. I didn't realise we were having a 50 year old.

😂😂

My ex-boyfriend wanted our future daughter to be named Emma, which is by no means a bad name but he was about 25 years late to the trend. I knew so many Emmas when I was growing up. I think women often are more cognisant of which names are in style and which are dated.

If we had a boy, he wanted him to be named after himself. Apparently he came from a long line of men who all had the same name and if I refused, I'd be breaking a centuries-old tradition. I wasn't a huge fan of his name (it was foreign and often mispronounced in this country) and I hated the idea.

Thankfully, we split up and I never had kids with him.

DH wanted Rowen for a boy and Willow for a girl.

Perfectly nice names (if a bit tree-themed) but far too popular and "modern" for me. Once I introduced him to the world of ONS stats and naming trends, he came around to my way of thinking and DD has a Welsh name (his heritage so he was happy) much further down the charts. 😄

MajesticallyAwkward · 18/05/2022 09:28

DH actually got his choice for our boy, I had lots of what I felt at the time were amazing names....
Titus
Jayne
Gabriel
Thor
Malcom
You get the idea, I was exhausted, hormonal, had a traumatic EMCS and scbu baby. DH suggested a very normal, not super popular name that suits ds. I still think he'd suit Titus though 😂

He had very little input for DD, everything I suggested he hated until one day I was watching one of my favourite shows and said 'oh actually, I really like (the name of the main character)' and he agreed so that's how DD was named.

Had he been pushed DD would have been something like kaylee or kara (anyone see a theme for geek points?)

Dyra · 18/05/2022 10:48

DD (born 2019) would have been Rachael, Sarah, Claire or Sandra without my input of a hard NO. Though he eventually came up with the name we did use.

He only ever suggested sensible boy names, so DS would most likely be called George

Dyra · 18/05/2022 10:53

@MajesticallyAwkward The only thing I've got is there's a few names from Firefly (Jayne, Malcolm and Kaylee) in your list.
