If only dads named babies....

Came across an old thread on baby names husbands/partners had suggested. A common theme seemed to be men suggesting really dated names, like those of school friends/work colleagues, or really out there names of comic book characters. Got me wondering what names would be in the top 10 if only dads were allowed a say in the naming....

To get us started, my DP thought Mark or Steven was the perfect choice for our son born in 2021! Good, solid names he said 😂

(He wanted Hera if either had been a girl. Which I secretly love also but it would have been hard to pull off).

PermanentTemporary · 17/05/2022 06:08

If we'd had a girl she would have been Rachel. It was the only name DH would contemplate. I was a bit reluctant as I have a (nice) cousin Rachel and don't like reusing names, but in fact it's probably better than most of my hormone induced choices ('Gabriella! Rhiannon!') and was a great choice.

We had a boy....

Vampirethriller · 17/05/2022 06:09

Abel, because he already had a son called Cain.

Soubriquet · 17/05/2022 06:17

Dh wanted to name dd Delilah.

Hell no!

We compromised on a name with both liked.

Initially he wanted to name ds Nickolai which I wasn’t keen on.

Then he decided on something else.

Then we compromised on a name we both liked, only for me to change my mind and go and choose his second choice.

WindyKnickers · 17/05/2022 06:20

Ex suggested DDs name which was v unusual but lovely and I agreed immediately after months of not being able to agree. I chose the middle name as its got a family connection. There were a few discussions about DSs name but it ended up being Exs second choice and not one I would have naturally shortlisted but is perfect for him. Again the middle name has a family connection for me.

BellaTheDarkOverlord · 17/05/2022 06:23

Our friend just had a baby. Her dh suggested 5 names, 3 of which were his friend's names including my dh, 4 his uncle's name and then 5th his own name. I don't think he had imagination for anything else 😂

Dh went the other way and wanted dd's middle name to be Batman.

TheWayTheLightFalls · 17/05/2022 06:39

DH wanted Boris. This was in October 2021. Though his dad is Vladimir so I suppose I can count myself lucky.

MrsMo21 · 17/05/2022 06:41

After insisting on DD1s name during a hormone induced pregnancy meltdown, I promised DH he could name any second child we had. (DD1 was IVF and we’d been told almost medically impossible to have another so I didn’t actually think that would ever come about)
Currently very pregnant with surprise DD2 and DH has named her.
Her name will be Jessica and it makes our DD1s name look positively flamboyant in comparison. Probably better than the Jane or Emma he was also going to pick. He basically named every girl he went to school with as his frame of reference.

Moral of the story - don’t promise your husband anything, ever 😂

My husband and I made a deal that he would name our son and I would name our daughter.

We chose not to learn the sex of our children so we had to be ready with a name at birth. I gave him my options for a girl to ponder and my husband hadn't offered anything to me for a son for the entire pregnancy.

Our first child together was a boy.

Two hours after his birth, he opened a baby name book and chose "Adam" from page one! 🤦🏻‍♀️

Seriously, nine months and that's how our son got his name. It's a nice name and has suited him for 24 years but jeez!

🤣🤣🤣

Not laughing at the name just laughing at how simple a decision it was for him!!

RhubarbFairy · 17/05/2022 07:18

Both boys. DH lobbied hard for Jack both times. No idea what he would have picked the second time round had he got his way the first time.

Though he did want the diminutive Alex instead of Alexander for DS2s middle name. I stood firm there too and he conceded on registering him that that was the better choice.

Girls names he was okay with actually. He was the one who came up with Isabel for DS2s potential girls name, which I loved.

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 17/05/2022 07:47

I quite liked most of DH's suggestions. I suggested Rosalind and Hope for DD, and Luke and Elliot for DS.

CandyApplePie · 17/05/2022 07:50

No thanks my ex wanted to make our daughter kizzy, I thought he was joking at first

Forgothowmuchlhatehomeschoolin · 17/05/2022 07:53

Dh wanted Buster but thankfully she was a girl!!

MintyGreenDream · 17/05/2022 07:55

Dh wanted Elijah or Colton..No!

Synchrony · 17/05/2022 08:00

DH actually suggested the names we ended up using. Fortunately I really liked it, as I don't think he'd have contemplated another.

We never agreed on a boy name. He wanted Theodore but I vetoed. He also wanted Douglas, which I didn't like initially but it grew on me, only for him to later say that he didn't like it and had never suggested it!

Mumofgirls2017 · 17/05/2022 08:01

That’s true about names that are a bit dated. My OH would have gone for

Paige
Bryony
Ciara
Roisin
Philippa
Alana
Caoimhe
Mary

John
Owen

not all totally dated but different style to me

The3rdWatermelon · 17/05/2022 08:04

I was born in the late 80s, when every other girl my age was called Laura or Emma or Rebecca. My dad’s one and only suggestion was… Carol!

I think my mum is still cross he even suggested it.

ElCoh · 17/05/2022 01:57

...what's wrong with Steven or Mark?

Objectively nothing at all. It's just he put no real thought in to it. A bit along the lines of
Me: have you thought of any boys names you like?
Him: No, but Mark and Steven would be fine.

A bit like @elp30's husband choosing Adam.

I then gave him a link to a name website to get some 'inspiration' (i.e. names other than people he knows from work/school) and he went completely the opposite direction choosing things like Hunter.

But Steven and Hunter definitely doesn't beat the Gary and Churchill twins 🤣

Roselilly36 · 17/05/2022 08:11

Maximilian probably for both of our DS! 😂

PailOfOdo · 17/05/2022 08:20

My parents were expecting b/g twins and my dad pushed hard for "Leonard" for a boy (not exactly a usual name for the time).
My mum was 7 months pregnant before she twigged that it wasn't for a particular, previously unmentioned love of Leonard Rossiter as he'd claimed. But Leonard Nimoy. She hated Star Trek about as much as he loved it so that was vetoed fairly quickly.

As it happened, we were both girls. But I have been affectionately referred to as Mr Spock by my dad well into adulthood.

AnnaMagnani · 17/05/2022 08:31

My parents agreed that any child would have a name that reflected DM's home Scandi country, be pronouncable in English (total fail on this count), and not sound too German - so as not to upset DF's English relatives postwar.

If it was a boy it was going to be Peter after DM's brother who died young.

Instead they have me. My DM came up with a list of names and my DF picked one.

My DM only found out 40 years later as my DF was dying that he'd picked that name as it was the name of a famous opera singer he fancied. Well done Dad on keeping a secret.

BlossomWind · 17/05/2022 08:36

DS1 would have been Andrew. If a girl Shona.
For DS2 he touted the name Prentice of all things, and it became one of a list of three potentials (I was never going to agree to it though) , but now claims he can’t remember that. I actually can’t remember what the other one was, apart from Prentice and the name he actually got.

saleorbouy · 17/05/2022 08:38

Aroundtheworldin80moves So is she called Stella after his favourite drink?

Rainbowbaby13 · 17/05/2022 08:50

Axel or Melody

Seasidemumma77 · 17/05/2022 08:54

My xdh want to name our dc after Lord Of The Ring characters!!!! I agreed, after lots of rows, to 1dc having a character name as a middle name but I got to choose it. Still regret not standing my ground.
