Hi!
Partner is Danish and we'd like to give our new little one (yet to arrive) a Danish name.
Have looked up the common ones but nothing has stood out. Thanks :-)

How are Freja and Magnus pronounced in Danish @KirstenBlest

KirstenBlest · 20/05/2022 09:52

@LadyEloise1 , not 100% accurate but as posted before. Sort of Frrrah-yuh and Mao-nuss. You'd need to hear a native speaker.

LadyEloise1 · 20/05/2022 09:54

Thank you. I think Freya - pronounced the English way is a pretty name. I only ever met one Freya and she was lovely.

newstart1234 · 20/05/2022 09:58

I like Vigga and Viggo. I've never met a young Viggo and only a couple of Viggas. They might be quite old fashioned. To me, the are creative, sensitive and strong.

Bearsan · 20/05/2022 10:06

I like Bo for a boy and Pia for a girl.

To me Pernille is an old ladies name but I can see that it sounds nice if you don't know or mind.

KirstenBlest · 20/05/2022 10:20

@LadyEloise1 , a friend has a Freya and she's about 30. It was a nice unusual name. It's been popular for a while now so it seems overused and dull.
It also shortens to Frey which makes me think of fray like in frayed jeans.

@Bearsan , I know a Pia. I'd be scared of it shortening to Pee.

Bo is great. Is Emma Bunton's son called Bo or did I imagine that?
Pia just reminds me of weeing ☹️

I came across a Swede called ‘bo’, pronounced ‘boo’. Would that be the same in Denmark? In Britain, it’d be bow.

AnnaMagnani · 22/05/2022 11:22

It would be somewhere between Bo and Bow but with a Danish accent is the best I can come up with describing it.

newstart1234 · 23/05/2022 07:43

Bwww maybe in danish accent

LadyEloise1 · 23/05/2022 08:00

Ulrika Jonson has a daughter called Bo.

newstart1234 · 23/05/2022 08:15

I'm indifferent to Bo in Danish but I don't think its transfers well to english. I think of Beau- pronounced bow.

newstart1234 · 23/05/2022 08:17

It's very popular right now in Denmark I think.

Has anyone any others? None of these are really jumping out at us. Perhaps there just arent that many Danish names workable in English?

Most Danish people I’ve come across don’t seem to have had Nordic style names although I do know a Marcel.

InkySquid · 24/05/2022 11:50

I think it's probably true, I can see that to a non-native speaker there looks to be lots of options but they tend to either
a) look identical or very similar to known names in English names but have different pronunciations, i.e. Magnus/Charlotte/Freya
b) have sounds that most British people will struggle to pronounce, e.g. Tove, Dorthe - I know how these names sound in my head but I can't make my mouth make the right sound!

FayCarew · 24/05/2022 12:41

some suggestions: studentsoftheworld.info/penpals/stats.php?Pays=DNK

Pick a name you like. If you deliberately use a name like Freya no one will realise the danish connection and half her family will pronounce it the danish way and the other half the english way, which isn't ideal

Thanks for that link, very fun.

I love how Yoda sneaks into the top 100 in Germany.
