Hi!
Partner is Danish and we'd like to give our new little one (yet to arrive) a Danish name.
Have looked up the common ones but nothing has stood out. Thanks :-)

My fav are Lotte and Mathias
agree you need to think if you want it to be pronounced the danish way or English, or if you want a name which is pronounced the same

InkySquid · 18/05/2022 11:49

Dorthe

An English person is very unlikely to be able to pronounce Dorthe correctly

I know a Danish girl called Ida, which I always thought was lovely.

Gorgeous!

The only Danish/English couple I know (living in Denmark) called their DCs Emma and Oliver.

I know some Norwegians with DCs called Nelly, Lotte and Jens.

I'd pronunciation is important then I would not recommend C/Konrad. Its pronounced differently in Danish to how it is in the UK
I have a Conrad (I am the Danish side of my marriage) and he quite likes the 2 different pronunciations but recognises it's a much softer sound in Danish to English. I still love the name.

HailAdrian · 19/05/2022 09:39

How is Freja pronounced in Danish? I'm intrigued!

midsomermurderess · 19/05/2022 10:00

How is Konrad is pronounced in Danish?

RumAndCocaCola · 19/05/2022 10:10

Fryer and Konral 😉

KirstenBlest · 19/05/2022 10:36

Yes, like Fryer but the r is throatier sort of like Frrry-uh

KirstenBlest · 19/05/2022 10:38

I think that Magnus is Mao-noos (mao like chairman mao) in some countries but not sure which.

Friend has a half-danish grandson and he's Mag-nus

midsomermurderess · 19/05/2022 15:12

I also think Laerke (Lark) is pretty, but that would cause pronunciation issues.

KirstenBlest · 19/05/2022 15:20

it sounds too much like Lurgy

midsomermurderess · 19/05/2022 15:52

Oh, that’s a pity.

debwong · 19/05/2022 16:22

Air Freja
Cnut

marionara · 19/05/2022 23:31

Magnus and Konrad are great, shame we already have an Erasmus relative!

Smurf123 · 19/05/2022 23:47

@midsomermurderess we have a Laerke on dh family side and I really struggle to say it correctly

Dh has a name like a Jacob and he really dislikes that it's 2 completely different pronoucations so our dc have names said the same in both English and Danish.

Boys I like Emil Mattias Nikolai
Girls Emilia Anna Mille Tove Sofia

midsomermurderess · 20/05/2022 05:38

Tove is lovely, if that said broadly how I think it is, Tuva?

FinallyHere · 20/05/2022 07:46

I love the name Anna

My Danish friend's DD is called Anna

That's the way its pronounced in Sweden. Its such a pretty name.

DuchessOfSausage · 20/05/2022 08:17

Not Danish but Swedish and Norwegian, I like the name Ã…se. I think it is Aase in Danish

AnnaMagnani · 20/05/2022 08:23

Tove is pretty much unpronouncable by most English people. As is Grete.

Unfortunately a lot of the girls names on the lists produced, I can personally guarantee you that English speakers will not pronounce the -e on the end which leads to some fairly awful names. They aren't good at the J either.

My name still sounds lovely, my Mum's they must know they should have asked first, it's dreadful.

I live another EU country.
My advise is whatever you choose, make it a name that the child won't have correct or explain the pronunciation & spelling in the UK for his entire life

Kids in my extended family with Danish mother are Mattias, Theo (T O) & Mia (Mee A)
