Me and my husband are really struggling to agree a name for a our baby boy.

We both love the name Emrys but our surname is Emms.

We are divided on if Emrys Emms has a lovely flow to it or if its too much.

What do you think?

It's ridiculous, and so is your H.

You both need to start again.
Each of you draws up a list of twenty names. You get to veto ten of his and he does the same for you. You then have a list of twenty names.

The names Ziggy and Emrys can't be included.

Starbeach · 15/05/2022 05:50

How about Emlyn rather than Emrys so you don't have both the double Em and S issue?

bloominglovelyorange · 15/05/2022 07:44

I think it works fine and I agree with all that @Ihatethenewlook says

20viona · 15/05/2022 07:46

No no

SheilaWilde · 15/05/2022 07:51

I like it and really, how often in life are we called, out loud, by our full name?

mizzo · 15/05/2022 08:12

I wouldn't, I don't like Emrys for starters and with Emms it sounds ridiculous.
I love Ziggy though and some of the names which give Ziggy as a nn.

ashitghost · 15/05/2022 17:04

Nope.

DuchessOfSausage · 15/05/2022 17:58

The s runs into the surname. People will hear 'Enry Simms

User3568975431146 · 15/05/2022 17:59

Sorry but no.

Beetlewings · 15/05/2022 18:00

I like it. It's iconic. A name worthy of greatness.

Beetlewings · 15/05/2022 18:03

And also it's Welsh and similar sounding first and surnames are common here

Agreed. I live in Wales and there's plenty of David Davies, William Williams, Emrys Evans etc

What names give Ziggy as a nickname?

jammyrose · 15/05/2022 21:36

Too much, sorry OP.

Enko · 15/05/2022 21:40

I don't actually mind it .
Can always add a traditional middle name like James

ElspethBoomingHowsen · 15/05/2022 21:42

I like it!

TenThousandSpoons · 15/05/2022 21:45

Eminem
or M&Ms

I usually like alliterative names but Em and Emms is too much, sorry.

BurnDownTheDiscoHangTheDJ · 15/05/2022 21:46

Too much for me but that said my ex father in law was called Peter Peterson and he was fine and successful.

cottagegardenflower · 15/05/2022 22:04

O, no!

Pineapplepine · 15/05/2022 22:14

It’s better than ziggy. I mean in wales lots of people are called eg Efan Evans, David Davies, Gruffydd Griffith etc. so emrys emms wouldn’t be seen as too strange in wales- are you in wales though?

i personally wouldn’t choose it, welsh or not. I think it’s way too samey. But if it’s between that or ziggy, then it’s the better option.

do you like any other welsh E names?
Efan
Elian
Elwyn
Edwyn

I know some people with the surname Emms. They are all lovely and wonderful.

What's the relevance of this?

EmotionBot9to5 · 15/05/2022 22:19

No, I wouldn't put those two together.

KirstenBlest · 16/05/2022 15:39

@Pineapplepine , I mean in wales lots of people are called eg Efan Evans, David Davies, Gruffydd Griffith etc. Efan and Gruffydd aren't very popular names in Wales, so those aren't good examples.

If you said David Davies, Robert Roberts, John Jones and William Williams, I'd agree with you. I know a lot of people called John Jones

CaffiSaliMali · 16/05/2022 20:32

I love Emrys although it is a bit much with the surname Emms. That said, I'd much rather be Emrys Emms than Ziggy Emms.

Could you double barrel the surname with your surname or your maiden name? Or if Emms is your surname, double barrel with his father's surname? E.g. Emrys Clifton-Emms. That way it would break up the Em and s sounds?

If not and you don't want the similar sounds then both of you need to suggest some new names.

If you want some other Welsh suggestions:
Ioan
Osian
Idris
Macsen
Tomos
Gwion
Owen
