Opinions on the first name Opal please is it to old fashioned or could it work? It reminds me of my grandmother who means a great deal to me but I've never heard it as a 'younger' name except for one lady in her 90s I've actually never heard it at all .....

I like it. I went to school with an opal (90s kids) and always thought it was pretty.

Pac35 · 06/05/2022 08:40

Love it!

Staynow · 06/05/2022 08:44

I'm not keen, I just think - middle name fruit? But I'm showing my age as they've been Starburst for a long time now.

beetree1 · 06/05/2022 09:14

Love the name Opal. It's on my list as well for a middle name as it also reminds me of my nan. I see people mentioning it a lot now so I don't think people would find it strange :)

ButterRose · 06/05/2022 09:23

Thanks everyone 😊 I didn't actually make the starburst connection until you mentioned it, I feel it's one of the 'gem' names that's not over used so I'll keep it on the short list

Please remember Starburst have gone back to Opal Fruits!!

Stickytreacle · 06/05/2022 09:42

We had a horse named Opal, she was often called 'Opeless! Just in case playground bullies start.

Shakeitofffff · 06/05/2022 09:43

I love the name but at my yougest's school they have an opal session during playtimes. Outdoor Play And Learn. I just think of that when I hear it now

Lochroy · 06/05/2022 10:58

Am I the only person that is reminded of a 70s or 80s old banger 🚙

(Yes, I know it's spelt differently, but I can't help what springs to mind)

KirstenBlest · 06/05/2022 11:05

Not keen, but nice seeing as it was your grandmother's name.
Use it as a middle name perhaps

SharonWattsCrispyExtensions · 06/05/2022 11:06

Are opals considered bad luck? I have a feeling there might be some superstition around them.

I like the sound though.

MrsBungle · 06/05/2022 11:07

I like it

Fioletovii · 06/05/2022 11:07

I think it's lovely

Tsuni · 06/05/2022 18:43

Every over 60 will mention Opal Fruits when you tell them

DSawyer · 06/05/2022 18:50

absolutely love it! I work with children, the older ones, but still have never come across an Opal. My colleagues that work with younger kids have mentioned over the past few years the rise in trend of more old fashioned names; ones that our grandmothers would have had. I think it’s a lovely connection to your grandmother too. How sweet.

Summerholidayorcovidagain · 06/05/2022 19:08

I am 50!! Opal Fruits. Made to make your mouth water...

OneCup · 06/05/2022 19:09

I am afraid it reminds me of Opel (Vauxhall's name on the continent)

springtimeishereagain · 06/05/2022 19:10

I love it. I like all the gemstone names.

Beamur · 06/05/2022 19:15

I nearly got called this! It was one of my Mum's favourites.
I've never come across one in real life. Definitely an underused gem name.

Horological · 06/05/2022 19:20

I love it!

I was going to mention this too, but presumably it will be a few years before OP’s child starts school by which time it will be called something else (like ‘playtime’).

CockSpadget · 06/05/2022 21:17

I love it, but I tend to love all the old names. It's one that is still very uncommon as well.

Mumofgirls2017 · 06/05/2022 21:33

I love it
