What a fantastic contribution to the thread.

It’s a poll. OP asked for responses. Hence the ‘1’. A perfectly valid response to her post.

Amelia=absence of limbs. The fact that you haven't heard of this doesn't mean it's wise you suggest OP disregards any such concern. It's even worse than children lumbered with the name Candida.

It’s not a nice connotation (and adds to the mystery of why it’s so popular).

since this is about pronunciation, I’d guess that lack of limbs is ‘Ay-mee-lee-ah’.

Ah mee lee ah.
My sons ex was named this, hated it and was called Mimi. I like it though.

2, but I know I'm in the minority.

When people pronunce it like no. 1 I just hear Emilia.

WildCoasts · 03/05/2022 09:30

ah-meal-ee-ah

Every Amelia I'm aware of is called Millie for short.

LowbrowVictoriana · 03/05/2022 09:30

I've only ever heard the "mealy" pronunciation. Which is pretty horrible.

Tbh, Millie is a vast improvement over ah-meal-ee-ah.

or Mia or Amy. Or pretty much anything. 😆

I like Emilia and say it as Em-ill-ya, but the Emeelia pronunciation seems more popular. The Emelia spelling is awful

Speaking of unusual spellings of ordinary names, I know a Karran, Lauran and a Darrin
