Classic but unusual boy names?

withacherryonthetop · 24/04/2022 14:26

Is this even a possible combo? Asking for friend who is having a boy. She likes more traditional or biblical names- think Isaac, Caleb, Abel, Henry etc. her dh likes more unique/modern names like neo and jaxon. Any suggestions on names that are traditional but not mega common would be great. Or any names that might be a middle ground! She is 37 weeks so not long left to decide! Thanks

Asa and Asher are biblical but not overused (although I think Asher may be on the rise). There will be lots of other biblical names which aren't overused.

Patrick, Francis, Peter, Paul, Laurence, Edwin, Edmund, Nicholas are all traditional but not uber popular. Gabriel and Raphael too.

I like Magnus a lot, strong and sounds quite cool. Might work for them both?

I don't think it's super popular either! We have an Ezra and like you, we have never met or heard of another Ezra and everyone also gives compliments, saying what a lovely name and how much it suits him.

I can’t even remember when or where I first heard it but as soon as we found out we were having a boy I knew that was his name. I think it maybe depends where you live, but to us and every one we know, it’s an unusual and unique name ☺️

I'll add Macsen (he was a Roman emperor so pretty classic), Lucas, Idris, and Sebastian. Maybe Apollo but that could be a bit out there.

withacherryonthetop · 27/04/2022 11:32

Big fan of Macsen. Thank you will pass some of these along! I also love idris and Ezra. Not sure on Nigel and Martin! Gus is pretty cute too!

Macsen is unusual and only classic if you are Welsh.
The anglicised pronunciation puts it in the same league as Jaxon for me.

@downtonupton , your list is an example why the web sites for welsh names are unreliable

Arwyn - ok, but the r is rhotic
Arwell - not a welsh name
Cedric - not a welsh name
Dylan - massively overused in Wales in 1960s and 70s
Elis - fine
Gruffydd (Griff) - fine
Aneurin (Nye) - only in S Wales. not pronounces An-eye-rin in the north
Jac - very popular
Osian - overused
Bryn - dated
Caden - not a welsh name AFAIK. Looks wrong and slightly feminine
Cai - fine
Cassian - not a welsh name
Dickon- not a welsh name, no K in Welsh
Drew - - not a welsh name, and unfortunate
Edwyn - not a welsh name
Elgar- not a welsh name
Evann - misspelt anglicised welsh name
Griffin- not a welsh name, but Gruffyn is
Jareth - not a welsh name
Jeston- not a welsh name
Lloyd - anglicised welsh name
Maddox - anglicised surname
Merlyn - No, really, just no, It's a pony
Steffan - fine
Tomos - fine

Out of 26, 12 are wrong and at least 2 are unfortunate.
Drew is stink, Merlyn is pony

didn't mean to offend - just seemed easier to nab a list online rather than go through all the ones we considered 15 years ago.

My child has one of those names (not one you listed as unfortunate, wrong, stink or pony)

CoddledAsAMommet · 27/04/2022 13:33

Linus

timoteigirl · 27/04/2022 13:42

What about Titus? Biblical but not too common. Easy to write and pronounce.

Otherwise Malachi or Solomon.

Don't like Cain or Abel because of the killing your brother association.

You didn't offend me @downtonupton , but the online welsh names lists are great if you want to give your names welsh names like Cedric and Caitlin or the Welsh for Pony and Wheelbarrow

Inspired, I have found one that says that Nerys is pronounced Lard-iss
It is beyond batshit
link

Many of the pronunciations on that page are wrong, as those of you who have heard the name Nerys (NERR-is) will know
