Hiya

I'm due in June. Need help deciding between Millie or Marley to name my girl. Which one cuter?

I love Millie!

AuntTwacky · 19/04/2022 01:01

Marley is a dog's name

RussianSpy101 · 19/04/2022 01:04

I know labradors with both these names.

Millie is an ok nickname. You need to think of this as the persons name for life, not which is cuter.

Marley is more dog but if human, more male in my opinion.

DramaAlpaca · 19/04/2022 02:15

Which is 'cuter' isn't a good way of choosing a name. I wouldn't want a cute name for myself or a daughter.

Of the two, Millie, but only because Marley is awful. I'd have it short for something less twee, like Camilla, Amelia or Millicent.

MockneyReject · 19/04/2022 02:27

Agree that cuteness isn't the only criteria. Also, agree with the suggestion of Millie as a shortened form of a 'proper' name.

I know a few of each in both my kid's age groups, so they both sound quite 'dated' to me, particularly Marley. Just mentioning it, in case that's something that bothers you.

DropYourSword · 19/04/2022 02:29

I know both a boy and a girl called Marley. I think it's a lovely name.

avamiah · 19/04/2022 02:32

Yes Marley is a dogs name and it was in a film called Marley and Me so Millie.

Kanaloa · 19/04/2022 02:34

They’re both nice. I prefer Millie myself - reminds me of Milly Molly Mandy!

bozna · 19/04/2022 02:41

I like Marla 😊

Ellie5341 · 19/04/2022 03:12

Miley? A mixture of both!

AmandaMirandaPanda · 19/04/2022 03:23

Marley for me. I don't get the dog connection, it's a very normal girls' name. Millie is OK if short for Camilla, Emilia, Millicent, etc but not as a stand-alone name.

Theoldwoman · 19/04/2022 03:31

It’s not really about cuter. She will be a teenager/ adult one day and doesn’t need a cute name!

Our dog is Millie and I prefer Marley for a boy.

What about Amelia? Millicent?

RussianSpy101 · 19/04/2022 06:54

@AmandaMirandaPanda the dog connection is the extremely well known film Marley and me about a dog.

Synchrony · 19/04/2022 07:29

I think of Marley as a dog and also male. So Millie.

linerforlife · 19/04/2022 08:01

Marnie is another alternative to Marley - sounds similar but not used often.

GoodSoup · 19/04/2022 10:44

Marley if I had to choose. I find Millie really dull and overused.

AmandaMirandaPanda · 19/04/2022 10:51

Thanks, RussianSpy101! Now that you mention it I recognise the name of the film and that it was about a dog, but had never seen it. For some reason I know several women and girls called Marley/Marli/Marlie so one (very famous) dog doesn't shift my ideas about it, but I can see if it's someone's first or only experience of the name it can be off-putting.

Purpleroseas · 19/04/2022 10:53

Millie is a dogs name and a nickname.

I much prefer Marley. Or how about Miley?

NobleYeats1 · 19/04/2022 11:06

Cute should not be a criteria for naming a person!! Marley is a famous dog and popular dogs name. Millie is a nickname and popular dogs name. Neither are proper names.

There’s bound to be a proper name out there with a cute nickname e.g. Amanda - nn Mandy?

Mumofgirls2017 · 19/04/2022 11:30

Not keen on either but prefer Millie for a girl

tearinghairout · 19/04/2022 11:35

I've always liked Millie. There's an old film - Thoroughly Modern Millie, with Julie Andrews. Marley says the dog to me, and I don't like surnames for girls' forenames generally.

backtobusy · 19/04/2022 12:11

Marley is a well known male dog.
I would go for Millie.

Purpleroseas · 19/04/2022 13:05

I know more dogs named Millie than Marley!

SallyWD · 19/04/2022 13:25

Marley is awful. It really is! I like Millie but think it should be short for something. I personally wouldn't choose a name because it's cute. What if she grows up to be a lawyer or something and wants a serious name?
