Olive as a boys name?

Gypsophiladaisy · 11/04/2022 12:30

I really love Olive as a boys name as a twist on Oliver thta I also like but is far too popular for me to ever use. However, I am aware its wayyyy more common as a girls name. Even though I have only ever heard of girls with this name, it sounds far more unisex to me and I would love to use it but wouldn't want negative reactions to it. Its so annoying that boys names can be used for girls but not the other way round!

I'm not sure why I like it so much (and I prefer it as a boys name than a girls name), but here are other names I like in case anyone has alternatives of suggestions for both boys and girls that would suit my style!

Eliza, Florence, Lottie, Tilliah, Grace (love the nickname grey for b+gs)
Greyson, Olive, Ezra

Thank you!!!

Ezra is nice and is a boys name. Maybe softer names like Jonah, Arlo etc. Or call him Oliver which is a nice name for a boy then he’ll have ‘olive’ in his name.

Bobbins36 · 11/04/2022 12:35

Ludicrous. Don't lumber your kid with this please. And is Tilliah even a name?

Fivemoreminutes1 · 11/04/2022 12:36

I love the name Olive, but for a girl. Please don’t give that name to a boy, unless you’re wanting to create confusion and open him up to potentially massive amounts of teasing. I agree with you that Oliver is just way too popular though.
How about Jonah, Rafferty, Beau, Dexter or Milo?

DockOTheBay · 11/04/2022 12:39

No Olive is definitely a girls name

TheYearOfSmallThings · 11/04/2022 12:41

It is a girl's name.

You could go for Olav, Olly etc.

Madrenetterhere · 11/04/2022 12:42

Oh behalf of your voiceless son, please don't call him olive. You might think it's cool but he won't and neither will his peers.

Pyewhacket · 11/04/2022 12:42

He wouldn't thank your for it at a school, believe me.

dontyoubother · 11/04/2022 12:43

It is a girl's name. Shame, but that's how it is. It'll be a complete pain in the arse for him. "No, not Oliver I did mean Olive, yes I know it's usually a girl's name..." x1000. You might like Theo, Alex, Kit, Max, Frank, Seth.

NuffSaidSam · 11/04/2022 12:43

You cannot call a bit Olive.

Ezra is nice.

I like Florence and Grace too.

But they're all popular, so if that bothers you maybe not suitable?

What about:

Oscar
Ivo
Rowan

Alice
Iris
Ottilie

deadlanguage · 11/04/2022 12:44

No, Olive has only ever been used for girls afaik.
Eliza is nice as is Charlotte (not Lottie as a given name). Ezra and Florence are ok. I don’t like Greyson or Tilliah.
I don’t really understand your like for Grey - it’s analogous to depressing to me! If you like Ezra, what about Isaac? The opposite to grey and depressing, it means ‘he will laugh’.

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 11/04/2022 12:45

Olive is definitely a girl's name and reminds me of On the Buses.

Arianya · 11/04/2022 12:48

Great idea to call your son Olive! Reminds me of A Boy Named Sue where his father named him Sue to toughen him up because he knew he’d get bullied and beaten all the time.

thisplaceisweird · 11/04/2022 12:50

That's like calling a little girl Craig, you can't do it OP

ApocalypseNowt · 11/04/2022 12:55

Strong 'Boy named Sue' vibes...

AlisonDonut · 11/04/2022 12:56

Olive.

Fuck me this is pure mumsnettery. Please stop it.

MintyGreenDream · 11/04/2022 12:57

Just call him jemima or dolly that would be just as bad

Tyrozet · 11/04/2022 12:59

Aside from the teasing, he will probably have a life of correcting people who assume it should be Oliver and that the R has been missed off the end somehow - that's if he reaches adulthood without changing it himself/ telling people to call him Olly anyway.

nearlyspringyay · 11/04/2022 13:00

Oh please come on, why would you do that to a kid?

Oldandcobwebby · 11/04/2022 13:06

No. No. No. You are setting the poor kid up for a lifetime of bullying and misery.

LittleRedRidingHood187 · 11/04/2022 13:06

If you want your child to be bullied throughout school go right ahead

99/100 name threads on here are people asking about stupid names. It seems to be a competition on who can have the most ridiculous name nowadays

TenoringBehind · 11/04/2022 13:08

Cruel.

Iwonder08 · 11/04/2022 13:08

That is one way to ensure the boy will have a hard life. Why would you do that to your own child? If he is male, don't give him a female name

MsTSwift · 11/04/2022 13:11

I thought of A Boy Named Sue too 😁. Dd2 used to be weirdly obsessed with that song !

FelicityPike · 11/04/2022 13:12

Oh for goodness sake no. That’s like that poor wee girl called Richard I once saw on TikTok!!

notangelinajolie · 11/04/2022 13:12

OP, Olive is a bit more than wayyyy more common as a girl's name because it IS a girl's name Grin
Don't do it.
