Olive as a boys name?

Gypsophiladaisy · 11/04/2022 12:30

I really love Olive as a boys name as a twist on Oliver thta I also like but is far too popular for me to ever use. However, I am aware its wayyyy more common as a girls name. Even though I have only ever heard of girls with this name, it sounds far more unisex to me and I would love to use it but wouldn't want negative reactions to it. Its so annoying that boys names can be used for girls but not the other way round!

I'm not sure why I like it so much (and I prefer it as a boys name than a girls name), but here are other names I like in case anyone has alternatives of suggestions for both boys and girls that would suit my style!

Eliza, Florence, Lottie, Tilliah, Grace (love the nickname grey for b+gs)
Greyson, Olive, Ezra

Thank you!!!

@Bellyups

Olive? For a boy? Don’t be so bloody cruel. What is it with parents using their children as ways of pushing boundaries these days Confused
I'm not trying to push boundaries at all. I just heard the name and really liked the sound of it. I like less common names but I agree that this is a bit too 'out there'. The purpose of my post was to ask for recommendations of similar names that are slightly more accepted in society. There's no need to label me as 'cruel'.

@Kanaloa

Ezra is nice and is a boys name. Maybe softer names like Jonah, Arlo etc. Or call him Oliver which is a nice name for a boy then he’ll have ‘olive’ in his name.
Thank you for giving recommendations and not spreading negativity!

I wouldn't use Olive for a boy.
If you want something that's like Oliver but not popular, I would suggest Olivier.
I'm not really sure what to suggest otherwise since your list seems like a mixed bag of styles to me. If you like Ezra, you may like other Biblical names like Eli, Levi, Asa, Abel, Saul, Seth, Reuben, Zion.

Purpleroseas · 11/04/2022 14:10

Olive is this to me 🫒 and I guess it could work for either gender

Olivia is definitely female and Oliver male.

2Gen · 11/04/2022 14:10

Oh please don't OP. It wouldn't go well for your DS because most people really do regard it as a girl's name. He'd be like Johnny Cash's "Boy Named Sue"!
I also associate it with Olive from "On the Buses" like @WhatATimeToBeAlive. I wouldn't even have it for a girl's name for that reason. Look up "On the Buses" on YT and you'll get an idea why!

How do you pronounce Tilliah?

Till-eye-ah or Till-ee-ah?

It reminds me on tilapia 🙈 sorry.

RedRec · 11/04/2022 14:22

I am really sorry. That was a knee jerk reaction. I wasn't thinking about you as a real life person with feelings and I am truly sorry.

That (below) was to you, OP, and was supposed to be quoting your quote to me. I don't know why it didn't attach.

CornyAsACornyThing · 11/04/2022 14:32

I knew an Olivaire once. And what about Olaf?

NewandNotImproved · 11/04/2022 14:58

Apart from the thread title, most of your names are all pretty top 10-top 30, if it was rareness you’re going for, look at less commonly used name statistics.

IncompleteSenten · 11/04/2022 15:00

No.

Floralnomad · 11/04/2022 15:07

Clive - only one letter different and an actual boys name
Olvin - a boys name and not many of them about .

Ihavehadenoughalready · 11/04/2022 20:06

No on Olive for a boy.

I suppose when he turns 18 he could get it changed to Oliver.

But by then he'd probably be scarred by all the snickers.

Feeellostindirection · 11/04/2022 20:16

Olive oil is my first thought, and that's a female character, never yet heard of a male being called olive. Unless you want to lumber your son with a name that will cause him a Lifetime of problems don't use olive.

AnyCakeButBattenburg · 11/04/2022 20:23

Olive is, and always will be, a girl's name.

Ihavehadenoughalready · 11/04/2022 20:28

Wait.....

Eliza, Florence, Lottie, Tilliah, Grace (love the nickname grey for b+gs)
Greyson, Olive, Ezra

Are you saying these are all unisex names? Or have I misunderstood you.

I see your point about lots of girl names now having started out as boy names, but why not the reverse. For example, Madison, Shawn, Ashley, Leslie, Beverly, Marion, Jo.

But there are still lots of names that can be either gender now. Olive just hasn't made the cut yet, and might not ever.

One of the kids's teachers named their son Addison. Each time I hear the name I think it's a girl and have to force myself to remember otherwise.

My own name used to be exclusively male but now nobody names boys my name. I have a male relative a generation back named Loran. I cannot imagine anybody today naming their son that because Laurens today are girls.

orangeisthenewpuce · 11/04/2022 20:32

You're only thinking about yourself OP. Don't be selfish.

MillenialInDenial · 11/04/2022 20:37

I second Olivier is definitely a better option if that's definitely the style of name I suppose you yourself could call him Olive with him actually having a stand alone name, although out of your list Ezra is the nicest not keen on Greyson.

Similar names for me would be something like Seb, Levi, Clark, Lucas.

Feckaffoutofit · 11/04/2022 20:40

Nooooo!

Not cool OP.

Andacherryonthetop · 11/04/2022 20:44

No to olive but I’m sure you’ve got the message by now. It’s a shame it’s a definite girls name but there it is. Other boy ideas:
Taliesin
Orin
Ash / Asher
Kyran
Ezekiel
Quinn

Girls
Also Quinn
Blair
Elodie
Zoey
Leonie
Lia
Sadie

Peppapigforlife · 11/04/2022 20:47

How about Tortilla Chip and then you can use your Tilliah as a nickname?

SpeedofaSloth · 11/04/2022 20:47

Er, not Olive for a boy or a girl, for that matter.

Libertaire · 11/04/2022 20:52

Great idea, OP. Then you could have a little girl and call her Derek. 🙄

Peony15 · 11/04/2022 20:55

is this a windup ? please don't give your male child a name that's an old fashioned female name. Cruel
