Would you use a name that has already been used by friends? By friends, we used to be close. Lived together for a few years, attended wedding/baby shower etc. But only seen once since baby arrived who is now 3 years old. Friends with her and her family on Facebook too. But don't live close. Interested to hear your thoughts.

Also, which do you prefer out of our girls name list:

  • Sofia
  • Matilda
  • Eloise
  • Savannah
  • Serafina

Thank you.

Yes I would.
And I like Sofia from your list.

DoodleBelle · 10/04/2022 08:33

Matilda is my favourite. I don’t like the F spellings of Sofia and Serafina, would prefer PH. They are all fairly popular names and if you don’t see them much anyway I really can’t see a problem with it, no-one owns a name. It’s not like it’s something terribly out there they are all lovely but pretty popular names. Just don’t ignore it so do say something about both having excellent taste or something along those lines as otherwise she could take offence and it could fester. Of course you know your friend best and she could take offence anyway but personally I don’t see the issue.

I’ve just had a baby and wouldn’t be annoyed if this happened to me, it doesn’t take anything away from your own baby’s name if anything it just shows your friend loves your baby’s name and that you have another thing in common.

eatentoomanygrapes · 10/04/2022 08:34

Serafina is lovely 💕 and yes I think you could use the name.

toastofthetown · 10/04/2022 08:57

I would, but I’m very much of the view that no one owns a baby name and that the only names I wouldn’t repeat are names that siblings have chosen. Especially with the names you’ve posted which are mostly very popular. I’d probably make a comment like ‘oh that’s our top choice for a girls too!’ but I wouldn’t ask permission. Serafina is by far my favourite of your list.

JoyLurking9to5 · 10/04/2022 08:59

All of those names are very popular right now, with the exception of Serafina it would just be like oh we like the same popular name. it's popular for a reason.

The only name that might make you look like a copycat (if you care) is Seraphina/Serafina

TheDaydreamBelievers · 10/04/2022 10:52
  • Sophia
  • Matilda
  • Eloise

Like these, Matilda is my favourite. Yes, I'd use the name in your position

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 10/04/2022 11:14

If it was the only name I liked I would

clpsmum · 10/04/2022 11:15

Yes if you like it go for it and I'd go with Matilda. My Matilda turned out to be a boy so never used it lol

duckie3 · 10/04/2022 11:27

Savannah is gorgeous!

KirstenBlest · 10/04/2022 12:57

Savannah is awful
Serafina a bit too unusual

Sofia and Matilda are ok but very popular

Not keen on Eloise. - find it a bit clunky

MrsBertBibby · 10/04/2022 13:05

Savannah is really poor.

I dislike the "weez" sound in Eloise, it sounds whiny.

Dislike Matilda, and Serafina is a bit try hard for me.

Sofia is the best, as long as it's "suhFIRE" rather than sofear, and the ph spelling is much better. Not mad on it though.

I certainly wouldn't risk a row for any of your list, though.

But if you love it, use it. You may never really be friends with this person again.

Crunchymum · 10/04/2022 13:45

Like Sophia but spelt that way (agree with previous poster about preferring the PH, although I'm not keen on Seraphena however it's spelt)

Prefer Elodie to Eloise (or even just plain Louise is quite nice and different without being too out there)

Matilda is okay. Same as Savannah. I don't love nor massively dislike.

If you like the same name as your friend and you were once very close but now not so much so, can't you just ask her?

CaffiSaliMali · 10/04/2022 13:53

Serafina is my favourite but they're all nice. I like the f spelling for Serafina, reminds me of Serafina from His Dark Materials.

Fivebeanchilli · 10/04/2022 14:56

I would unless it was a very rare name.

Sofia - ok. Popular but pretty. I prefer it spelt Sophia unless you're pronouncing it like the city
Matilda - popular but lovely
Eloise - I'm not keen at all. I love Elodie though.
Savannah - don't like at all.
Serafina- I like Seraphina and prefer Seraphine. I'm not keen on the -f spelling at all

From your list i would choose Matilda but I do really like Seraphine.

DramaAlpaca · 10/04/2022 15:01

Yes I'd use the name in your situation.

As for the names, all nice apart from Savannah which let's just say isn't in the same style.

WowIlikereallyhateyou · 10/04/2022 15:04

No to Eloise and Savannah
Like Sophia
Find Serafina a bit fussy
Matilda too common now

Partyatnumber10 · 10/04/2022 15:09

Yes no problem at all and I love your whole list but particularly Savannah and Eloise.

FayCarew · 10/04/2022 15:21

Another one who prefers the Sophia spelling

Sofia looks too much like Sofa

JenniferBarkley · 10/04/2022 15:57

I wouldn't because I wouldn't like the idea of people talking about us behind our backs and saying we'd copied. Less of a factor if it's a popular name though.

I like your first three names and the last three not so much.

SemperIdem · 10/04/2022 16:02

@MrsBertBibby does anyone pronounce it that way anymore? The so-fe-ah pronunciation is far more usual these days.

Sophia Gardens in Cardiff is said suh-fy-ah but that is the only time I’ve ever hear it said as such.

Mumofgirls2017 · 11/04/2022 06:21

If it’s Sofia yes, Seraphina no- depends how popular name is

My favourite is Seraphina prefer that spelling followed by Matilda then Eloise

Riverlee · 11/04/2022 07:55

I named my son with the same name as my boss, who had a baby a few months before. Maybe I was naive, but I never gave it a second thought (twenty years ago). Neither of the two boys have ever met, and I’m only in Christmas card communication with ex boss.

Unless it had extra special significance, then I would use it.

Love Elouise.

DogsAndGin · 11/04/2022 08:15

Yes.
And, Savannah and Serafina
