Nell- (y) the Elephant
Fern- ok
Eleanor- like it but there was one at my primary school who smelled it BO so it reminds me of her, probably not an issue for you though Grin
Cora- like it
Maggie- ok
Heidi- ok
Mirren- my favourite
Silvie- like it
Greta- harsh sounding
Dorothy- the dinosaur, would you like to dance with me?

Gazelda · 08/04/2022 22:02

Nell - love it
Fern - ok. A bit placid.
Eleanor - elegant
Cora - not too keen
Maggie - prefer Margaret.
Heidi - love it. I'd imagine her to be fun and adventurous
Mirren - lovely
Silvie - not keen
Greta - not keen
Dorothy - don't like.

MajorCarolDanvers · 08/04/2022 22:05

Eleanor
Mirren
Cora

Great names

I don't like any of the others.

Bellyups · 08/04/2022 22:06

Only like Silvie

BlackcurrantTea · 08/04/2022 22:09

Nell is amazing, I would have used it for DD except it rhymes with our surname Grin! I'd call her Eleanor with Nell for short.

Love Maggie too, and the rest are okay except for Mirren, which I wasn't aware of as a name (and I've worked in several schools!), and just makes me think of Dame Helen Mirren...

Thewolvesarerunningagain · 08/04/2022 22:12

Nell - is a nn for Eleanor, also on your list
Fern - Jilly Cooper
Eleanor - great. Good solid name. Lots of Ellies about though
Cora - not to my taste
Maggie - Diminutive of Margaret. It’s a nice name but as an 80s child I just want to shout ‘out out out’ :-)
Heidi - wishy washy
Mirren - surname
Silvie -lovely. Sylvia’s nicer
Greta- now you’re talking!
Dorothy - fab!

YourWinter · 08/04/2022 22:16

Eleanor / Nell.

The Greta that dominates media headlines makes that a definite NO from me.

I don’t much like any of the others.

DramaAlpaca · 08/04/2022 22:20

Eleanor with Nell as the diminutive is OK.

I like Sylvie (that spelling) Fern and Dorothy. Cora is growing on me and Mirren might as well.

I dislike Maggie, Greta and especially Heidi.

Hohofortherobbers · 08/04/2022 22:26

I like Maggie and Heidi

Mytoddlerisamazing · 08/04/2022 22:32

Brilliant list! By which I mean it includes my daughter's name and many that I considered Grin

I would spell Sylvie like this, or even better Sylvia.

Not keen on Mirren - how about Meredith or Mairi?

All the rest are great.

jesusmaryjosephandtheweedonkey · 08/04/2022 22:43

Love Nell
We also had Tess and Marnie on the list

Thehundredthnamechange · 09/04/2022 00:57

Nell - love on its own or as a nn for Eleanor/Helena
Fern - love
Eleanor - love with nn Nell
Cora - don't like much, a bit nothing-ey
Maggie - like as a nickname for Magdalena or Margot
Heidi - feels boring somehow
Mirren - prefer Miriam
Silvie - love
Greta - like
Dorothy - love

Mumofgirls2017 · 09/04/2022 05:36

Nell- nice short for Eleanor, Helena or Penelope
Fern- Britton
Eleanor- ok
Cora- love
Maggie- not quite due revival yet
Heidi- nice
Mirren- no
Silvie- spelt Sylvie nice
Greta- ok
Dorothy- love

OutingHobby · 09/04/2022 05:41

Dorothy wins for me

Elbie79 · 09/04/2022 06:26

Cora's lovely

Not keen on the rest

BurglerBill · 09/04/2022 07:28

Fern - love love love. Rowan? Willow? Hazel?
Eleanor - a see above
Cora - like
Maggie - like, nn for Marguerite?
Heidi - quite like, bit a bit twee
Mirren - no, love Merryn
Silvie - no, love Sylvia
Greta - ugly
Dorothy - no, like Dot. Odette?

mathanxiety · 09/04/2022 07:55

I really only like Silvie and Greta.

I would spell Silvie 'Sylvie'.

pilates · 09/04/2022 08:06

Eleanor is my favourite but dislike Ellie
Silvie is very nice
The worst Dorothy, Maggie and Cora they sound frumpy to me

FrecklesMalone · 09/04/2022 08:24

Nell- As a nickname lovely
Fern- actually beautiful.
Eleanor- bit bland
Cora- love but sounds rubbish in out accent
Maggie- love the name Maggie. Strong and fun
Heidi- I know a few. A bit silly
Mirren- nice
Silvie- spelt Sylvie pretty
Greta- strong (same issue with accent on the a)
Dorothy- surprised myself by loving it. Or Dorothea.

KylieCharlene · 09/04/2022 08:42

Love Heidi
Also like Mirren and Greta.

PinkSyCo · 09/04/2022 08:50

Love Silvie, but prefer Sylvie. Also really like Heidi. Not keen on the rest on your list.

PinkSyCo · 09/04/2022 08:51

Tell a lie, I also like Eleanor.

babynamelover · 09/04/2022 08:59

I like Fern, Eleanor, Cora and Greta.

It's a very solid list 😊

TempsPerdu · 09/04/2022 09:55

Good list OP. It contains my DD’s name - won’t reveal which it is, but suffice to say it’s very much a ‘marmite’ name as the responses so far demonstrate! Smile

Nell - Can’t warm to this. Too nicknamey and I can’t help thinking of Nelly the elephant.
Fern - pretty without being girly; fresh-sounding - but prefer as a middle name
Eleanor - like; elegant and timeless, lots of good nicknames, but maybe a tad fusty/prim?
Cora - like
Maggie - really dislike the ‘mag’ sound
Heidi - not a fan; a bit cutesy/twee
Mirren - unsure on this, but I love both Merryn and Maren/Marin
Silvie - nice spelt Sylvie

Greta - quite like
Dorothy - would have said no way this time last year but it’s growing on me. Dot makes a cute nickname.

AnnaSW1 · 09/04/2022 09:58

The only one I like is Sylvie
