Sounds like a plant or a tree

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 08/04/2022 10:53

A lifetime of confusion over spelling and pronunciation.

muckandnettles · 08/04/2022 10:54

How do you want it to be pronounced?

tokyotolondon · 08/04/2022 10:57

A colleague (Iranian) has named her daughter this and it's actually quite common name in Iran. I think it's very pretty. A diminutive version of Layla. I would personally choose the Layli spelling.

tearinghairout · 08/04/2022 10:57

I haven't heard of it. Will it get confused with Leila? But they are both beautiful.

FayCarew · 08/04/2022 12:27

Short for Leylandii or Layland?

Lily/Layla/Kayleigh/Hailey confusion likely

rosesareredvioletsare · 08/04/2022 14:00

@FayCarew Nope it’s the Persian form of Leila, it means night / night beauty

i don't really know any farsi, but the arabic for night is Lail (like tate and lyle). I'd check with someone not just accept something off a website.

emmathedilemma · 08/04/2022 15:36

I prefer Leila!

deadlanguage · 08/04/2022 15:40

I think whichever way you spell it, it will probably get mistaken for Leila a few times. Layli is probably the spelling least likely to be mistaken for anything else, I think. (I’m thinking Leili could also be somehow construed as Lily or Laili as lie-li)

rahjama · 08/04/2022 15:58

I think that's beautiful

MinoucheSapphic · 08/04/2022 15:59

I think it's very pretty. One of my favourite musical groups, Vas, have a song named Leyli (their singer is Iranian). If you like the name, you might enjoy the song too.

It might get misheard as Layla sometimes, but at the same time, almost every name can be misheard as something else.

Firebird83 · 08/04/2022 22:18

I know a Leyli. I like this spelling.

Xenaaa · 09/04/2022 07:24

Laylie?

Lélie?

OutingHobby · 09/04/2022 07:30

I don't like it sorry

GeneLovesJezebel · 09/04/2022 07:31

No, it sounds like a conifer.
Leila is nice.

notacooldad · 09/04/2022 07:38

Nope it’s the Persian form of Leila, it means night / night beauty
Are you or partner from a middle Eastern background?

babynamelover · 09/04/2022 09:02

It's very girly I'm not sure I can imagine it on an adult though.

Luredbyapomegranate · 09/04/2022 13:42

I’d call her Leila and use it as a nn

It’s just too babyish for an adult - same as if you want to call your baby Kitty, fine, but give her Katherine as a full name

passwordnotsecure · 09/04/2022 13:44

Never heard it but do know a couple of Leilani's in the school I work in
