'Leifchild' ?! Leifchild Jones was MP for my constituency in the early 1900s. Would it just be pronounced Leaf-child?

It sounds so hippyish for a leader of the temperance movement!

Well, he's Welsh so I suspect I would be wrong in many of my assumptions Grin

Wikipedia does say As a temperance campaigner Leif Jones was sometimes referred to as 'Tea-leaf Jones' which suggests a particular pronunciation (though cloth-eared anglophones are hardly a new invention).

It is just Leaf-child, but the "leif" is from German "lieb" and it means "dear child" as it is a surname, not as hippyish as it sounds. John Leifchild was an English Congregational minister and a writer who lived in the early 19th century so I'm guessing Leifchild Jones was named after this character?
