I adore Emma but I'd like some opinions.

  1. I have a name beginning with E, is it too Kardashian to have a mother and daughter with first same initial ? I have no Kardashian alliteration ambitions.
  2. How common is it and is it too popular atm?
  3. The other names I like are Louisa and Lucy. Do you prefer either of those.

Thank you!Biscuit

OP this website is very helpful; it shows trends as well as popularity ranks and also absolute numbers. It records how Emma is steadily declining in relative popularity:
names.darkgreener.com/#emma

There is now a much, much wider range of names for girls than there was in the 1990s. So the chances of all but the top ten or twenty names being all around you are not great.

As well as the dashing Emma Peel, there's also the Jane Austen heroine 'Emma' (Jane Austen said she liked her although others would not) and the formidable Queen Emma (born a princess in Normandy, became queen of England, Norway, Denmark etc ...), who cleverly commissioned her own very, very political biography en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emma_of_Normandy

I like Emma, it's not super popular (there's one in dd's class) and most Emma's I meet are older. My name is one of your other choices and I know quite a few my age or younger (I'm almost 40!) but not older!

GeneLovesJezebel · 05/04/2022 17:04

I like Emma and Lucy. Both pretty and classic.

sanityisamyth · 05/04/2022 17:18
  1. I have the same initial as my mother. Our surname also begins with E.
  2. I wouldn't say it's common/popular at the moment.
  3. I prefer Emma but I might be biased 😜. Lucy is a nice name. I don't like
Louisa much (my middle name is Louise and I prefer that to Louisa)

Love love Emma. I've always loved the Jane Austen book so maybe that's why. I think it's beautiful, classic, strong yet pretty.

WeasilyPleased · 05/04/2022 22:34

Emma is a strong beautiful name. Louisa is ok but will be Lou and this is personal but I have never met a pleasant Lucy.

Bogofballs · 05/04/2022 22:44

I prefer Emmeline

Has Emma in it (pronounced Emma-Leen) but it’s not very common

Beautiful name

halfsiesonapotnoodle · 05/04/2022 22:45

Emma is sooooooooooo boring. Louisa is much nicer.

DramaAlpaca · 05/04/2022 22:45

I love Emma, it's my favourite name. I had boys so couldn't use it.

Luredbyapomegranate · 05/04/2022 22:48

Wouldn’t worry about the same initials (unless this is your number 6.. Grin)

I really like Emma, it’s very timeless, from William the Conquerers mother, to Jane Austin, to Emma Raducanu

Quite like Louisa, maybe a bit fussy - Lois instead?

Not very keen on Lucy - too little girly - but like Lucienne, Lucia - also quite like Luella (which I appreciate is irrational because it’s quite fussy..)

Kite22 · 05/04/2022 22:51

I really like the name Emma.

I generally think it is a good idea for everyone to have a different initial, but I think Emma is far nicer than either of the others, so I still prefer Emma.

Firebird83 · 05/04/2022 23:30

Louisa is much nicer.

jennymac31 · 05/04/2022 23:42

I like Emma but I'm biased as it's my DD's name. Couldn't convince my DH to name her after my DM (Emmaline) so we went with Emma. We've never thought that it was a popular name, as there are much more Emilys around. My DD's 9 and hasn't met another Emma during her years in nursery or at her primary school.

IStandWithMaya · 05/04/2022 23:45

All of the names you mentioned are lovely OP. Smile

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 05/04/2022 23:58

Unless your surname is Lee, it's a good name. It's not exciting but it's not ever going to raise eyebrows or get odd comments. I like it.

user1477391263 · 06/04/2022 03:25

I find it very dull, because it was so overused in the 70s and 80s, BUT also sounds similar to a lot of name-sounds that are popular now (Ella, Emily, Emilia, Etta, etc etc ). But there's nothing WRONG with it. Go for it if you like it. There is nothing wrong with having the same initial, by the way! I know quite a few families where that is the case.

MuchuseasaChocolateTeapot · 06/04/2022 12:07

Love Emma, it’s a beautiful name. Go for it!

DogsAndGin · 06/04/2022 20:19
  1. No
  2. Not very
  3. Lucy is on par with Emma. Both lovely
Spaghag · 06/04/2022 20:24

Emma Louise is the sister of Sarah Jane and was born between 1970 & 1980.

KirstenBlest · 07/04/2022 16:31

Their daughters are Olivia Grace, Lily Rose, Amelia Rose and Ellie May
