Runningoutoftime41 · 01/04/2022 15:33

I am currently 1 week overdue, and still haven’t finalised names. Don’t know what we’re having, so need to have boy and girl names up our sleeves.

Interested to hear what people think of my favourites so far... and any suggestions of names I may like, based on current list?

Fay
Charlotte
Georgia
Imogen
Emily
Penny
Eloise

Morris
Leo
Joe
Doug
Simon
Jack
Louis

Thanks!

Fay - I like it, it reminds me of Faeries :)

Charlotte - it's nice enough, a little bit dull. There are Lottie's everywhere though. I prefer the nn to be Charley

Georgia - I really like it

Imogen - nice but quite popular for young children in my local area

Emily - pretty

Penny - I love Penny but dislike nns for full names and also dislike Penelope. Lovely on somebody else's child though

Eloise - not a fan

Morris - too surnamey for me

Leo - nice but dd5 has 3 in her class

Joe - love Joseph not keen on Joe on its own though

Doug - not a fan

Simon - simple Simon and the pieman
Jack - love it
Louis - hate it, I find it such a whiney name

Love Fay and Leo

Really not keen on Georgia but that’s because it’s my ExSIL name and she’s a moody old cow Grin

Fay - I quite like, but prefer the Faye spelling.
Charlotte - Timeless classic. I love Lottie.
Georgia - I quite like.
Imogen - I've never really taken to this, but perfectly fine. Just not my taste.
Emily - I've always liked. It doesn't seem as over popular these days.
Penny - I like, but would have Penelope as full name.
Eloise - Pretty.

Morris - not keen, sorry.
Leo - I really like.
Joe - I like Joseph as a full name.
Doug - Dislike, sorry.
Simon - Can't really judge as it reminds me of my ex.
Jack - I like.
Louis - I like, but would be confused whether to pronounce it like Lewis or Louie as I've heard both for that spelling.

Fay - nice and quite unusual at present - just so long as your family is not exceptionally tall and statuesque. As you know it means 'fairy' and traditionally fairies were small and slight.
Charlotte - fine
Georgia - I very much prefer Georgina
Imogen - fine but not my taste; there are nicer Shakespearean names
Emily - a pretty name but very 'safe', if that matters. It might not, of course.
Penny - Vastly prefer Penelope.
Eloise- trendy and might - in retrospect - look to be very much of its time

Morris - Am not keen on any surname as a first name. Rather irrationally dislike the first name Maurice.
Leo - As others have said, a great name but very popular. Might you consider Leonard?
Joe - Joseph is a lovely name
Doug - I really like Dougal
Simon - Fine, though personally I'm rather neutral about it
Jack- Fine, though I think John is even better.
Louis - Very popular, but nothing wrong. Pronouced 'Loo-ee'.

I like Georgia and Jack.

Runningoutoftime41 · 01/04/2022 19:29

Thanks everyone!

I think the issue I have is that I like a lot of the nicknames, but not too keen on the long versions. Not sure if it’s too strange to put the “nickname” on the birth certificate. ie Penny rather than Penelope

I do worry about how popular Leo is.

Love Madeleine, Hannah, Elodie and Annie for the girls, and love George, Cole, Henry and Vincent for the boys. They’ve been added to the list!

I'm your opposite - I can't stand using nicknames instead of names on the birth certificate. In general I wouldn't do it even if you prefer the diminutive, because people will always assume "Penny" is Penelope and call her that. Also because she might like the option for a grown-up name rather than a diminutive to use on CV, with her boss, etc.

Marty13 · 02/04/2022 02:11

That aside I do like Faye in your list. For your boy's names I'd vote Louis or Leo. I find Jack so overused that it's just bland.

mathanxiety · 02/04/2022 04:33

I really don't like any of your girl names. They're very safe, even a bit boring.

From your boy name list I like Joe (if short for Joseph), Doug (if short for Douglas), Leo, and Louis (if pronounced lou-ee).

Suggestions for girl names:
Rosemary
Josephine
Leonie
Louisa
Carys
Rowena
Elin
Alice

Fay
Charlotte

Hate Morris and Doug

DogsAndGin · 06/04/2022 20:29

Fay - dated 90s
Charlotte - love it
Georgia - love
Imogen - love
Emily - like
Penny - nn
Eloise - love

Morris - hate. Sounds like a wizened old man
Leo - too common and cheap
Joe - nn
Doug - old man
Simon - it’s ok at a push
Jack - too common
Louis - it’s nice enough

Sorry. Love your girl’s list!

Luredbyapomegranate · 06/04/2022 20:37

Georgia and Douglas (not Doug)
Rest are either overused or wet
