I don't like any baby names

I am struggling to think of any baby names for a girl...

When I have thought of some names I've gone off them or I like the name but for someone else's baby not mine. For example I like Lucy but don't think its the name of my child if that makes any sense.

I was thinking Anna for a while but have gone off it and my DH thinks it's boring. He also vetoed Alice and perhaps its boring too.

When I was younger I wanted to call my daughter Aurora but am put off it because its associated with Disney now and that was nothing to do with why I liked it.

So any suggestions? Ideally perhaps a name that is Scottish or works well in Scotland but can also be pronounced in other European countries. Something not too out there, but not too common. Not too frilly either.

I have a few weeks to go as baby not due until summer, but at least would like a shortlist of possibilities.

Instead of working your way through reams and reams of names, it might be worth you just waiting to meet her. You’ll soon find a name that fits

I don’t think I would have been so worried about picking in advance of my husband could have spent lots of time with me post birth deciding - we only get 2 hours post birth than an hour a day until I’m allowed home so it feels a little more pressured due to current hospital covid restrictions

Fwiw I think any name can feel a bit strange on your baby at first. You're still getting to know (over the course of weeks/months/years) who they are, and it feels strange to call them a name you've just chosen (as opposed to someone having introduced themselves to you iyswim). Just call them sweetie or darling or munchkin or pudding or whatever nickname comes to mind in the hormonal stage of the first few weeks Grin And IME their actual name grows on you as the baby grows too!

How about Fiona? Tessa? Georgina? Skye/Skyler?

If you can't decide, just choose one or two that you think are ok, if maybe a bit boring. Once your baby is here, you will have to settle on one pretty soon, and it will grow on you/grow to suit your child.

Adela, Iona or Arabella rather than Aurora
Annis, Annabel, Annabeth, Agnes, Agatha, Astrid, Ailsa or Aphra rather than Anna
Elsbeth, Edith, Constance, Beatrice or Ishbel rather than Alice

Catriona, Flora, Fenella, Finnola, Kirsten, Mirren, Marsali, Davina / Davinia, Margaret / Marguerite (nn Margot if you want), Lorna, Heather, Genista, Jean are all names with Scottish associations

Susannah, Julia, Esther, Honor, Frances, Lois, Celia / Cecilia, Serena, Claudia, Stella, Marina, Philippa, Marianne are all classics (but not overused)

I have a Lucy, she was baby for two weeks as we were just so unsure. Fortunately we kept it and it suits our daughter perfectly. I am biased but say go with Lucy. Plus my daughter was the only Lucy in her primary school.

Thanks for all the suggestions - some of them are maybes. I think I will try not to worry about it for a few weeks.

I have also thought of a name I like and it a potential - but it happens to be the name of my manager at work - so am thinking it might be a bit weird...?

Nah, if you like it go for it. You might even get a pay rise Grin

ButterRose · 31/03/2022 10:27

@GreenOrangePear how likely will your manager be to socialise with you and your child outside of work? I wouldn't think it odd for them to share a name unless your close friends as well
