I've narrowed my shortlist down, tried to avoid all the currently over-used names:

Astrid
Dina
Gabrielle
Rosalind
Roxy
Zara

Thoughts?

Astrid - Pippi Longstocking
Dina - sprinter
Gabrielle - 1990s pop songstress
Rosalind - As You Like It
Roxy - music
Zara - Tindall

I'd pick Rosalind - see description

Riverlee · 28/03/2022 14:26

Astrid - boho/hippy
Dina- dinner (Dinah?)
Gabrielle - singer, classic name, lots of possible nn (Gaby, Ella etc)
Rosalind - lovely name
Roxy - short for Roxanne
Zara - Royal, nice name, everyone knows it, but not overused

girlmom21 · 28/03/2022 14:27

I think Roxy is a dogs name

ButterRose · 28/03/2022 14:32

Astrid - nice individual name not to out there
Dina - Dinner anyone?
Gabrielle - nice but in my opinion overused
Rosalind - brings bad memories of an overbearing MIL
Roxy - cool funky name hard to take seriously
Zara - fun name not overused can be anything you want to be

Pandypuff · 28/03/2022 14:32

Astrid - nice but gaining popularity fast
Dina - I like it spelled Dinah
Gabrielle - I prefer Gabriella
Rosalind - I don't like the Roz sound but I like Rosa
Roxy - seems dated
Zara - beautiful

MurderAtTheBeautyPageant · 28/03/2022 14:36

I presume Dina is pronounced Deenah? Not like dinna as pp's have assumed.

I think my favourite is Gabrielle but I don't like Gabby so maybe wouldn't pick it. I'd probably go for Zara. I like Roxanne too, even though it's not strictly on your list.

AdaColeman · 28/03/2022 14:43

Astrid... cool calm Nordic type
Dina... story book cat, though I do like Diana
Gabrielle... I prefer Gabriella, but it's very popular just now
Rosalind... very pretty, but swamped by all the other Rose names
Roxy... Biscuit
Zara... pretty, and a nice meaning (star) but dated.

Baileysoncereal · 28/03/2022 15:01

I love the name Astrid, imagine her to have long blonde hair, skinned knees, and rosy cheeks
Dina - literally no thoughts
Gabrielle - cool, aloof a little snooty. I don’t mind the name but I don’t think it works if you’re British personally.
Rosalind - quiet, a bit moody, long straight hair, wears black
Roxy - dry hair, bad complexion, Ill fitting clothes. It’s not a name I like
Zara - no real thoughts on image but I think the name is very dated

DoorLion · 28/03/2022 15:09

I have just put down what the names make me think of without reading the thread as it might affect me
Astrid - cool, pixie haircut, German roots, space, the photographer who took pics of the Beatles in Hamburg
Dina - dark hair, entrepreneur, the heroine of A Fine Balance
Gabrielle - posh, horsey, long blonde hair, bossy
Rosalind - pretty, English rose, clever
Roxy - showgirl
Zara -shop

Now to see what other's think! My favourites there are Rosalind and Astrid.

Fl0w3ry · 28/03/2022 23:12

Astrid - it sounds spacey and a bit hippy chick. can’t decide if I like it or not.

Dina - American sounding. I don’t like it.

Gabrielle - pretty name, but quite a few around.

Rosalind - it sounds brash and a bit frumpy at the same time to me. I don’t know why.

Roxy - just makes me think of the character that used to be in Eastenders. It has a bit of a stripper feel to me too.

Zara - I quite like it, thought do associate it with the shop. I think it’s the name I like most out of your choices.

Justkeeppedaling · 28/03/2022 23:18

Astrid - Swedish blonde, tall
Dina - Deena or Dye-na? Old lady
Gabrielle - French tart
Rosalind - posh
Roxy - stripper
Zara - nice middle class girl

WeasilyPleased · 28/03/2022 23:38

Astrid. Cold and hard. Shortened to Ass?
Dina. Rhymes with Tina? Much prefer Dinah.
Gabrielle. Pretty but not keen on Gabby.
Rosalind. Knew a dreadful one who burped all the time.
Roxy. Makes me think of old fashioned cinemas.
Zara. Cool and well dressed. Posh.
I like Zara best.

Howmanydaysuntilfriday · 28/03/2022 23:56

Astrid
Dina
Gabrielle
Rosalind
Roxy
Zara

Astrid - asteroid
Dina - dinner time
Gabrielle - lovely name
Rosalind - lovely name - makes me think of Shakespeare don't know why
Roxy - red light girl
Zara - the shop

MarmiteCoriander · 29/03/2022 00:06

Astrid- I think Scandinavian and asteroid. I like it, but also like Imogen.

Dina- Not keen. I think because it could be read as dinner, or the association of 'Dina the cleaner'. Slightly prefer Dana.

Gabrielle- very 90's for some reason. Maybe a singer? not keen

Rosalind- Like it as had a nice friend at school with the name. If you are into nicknames, then it could be Rose, Rosa, Rosy etc

Roxy- dogs name, music and cinema brands. My least favourite of your names

Zara- I don't hate it, but do think of the shop or Zara Tindall

Luredbyapomegranate · 29/03/2022 02:55

I’d go for Roxanna

Astrid - cool but fun - it’s getting popular though
Dina - sounds like a nn - Meh
Gabrielle - only use if you are happy with Gabby
Rosalind - lovely but she’ll likely end up one of a million Rosies
Roxy - no. But Roxanne or Roxanna is nice
Zara - nice, but getting popular

FlamingoDust · 29/03/2022 20:59

Love Roxy! My eldest has a name that used to be referred to as a stripper name on mumsnet now it's a name that is mentioned on nearly all threads as a suggestion that people love!

Luredbyapomegranate · 29/03/2022 22:22

@FlamingoDust

Love Roxy! My eldest has a name that used to be referred to as a stripper name on mumsnet now it's a name that is mentioned on nearly all threads as a suggestion that people love!
Still, I would not use Roxy as a full name, partly because it isn’t a name.

Roxanne and Roxanna are fine.

Rosemary2022 · 29/03/2022 22:28

Astrid - beautiful girl

Have you considered Gabriella?

lightisnotwhite · 29/03/2022 22:29

Astrid - hippy. Bit fat.
Dina - American
Gabrielle - working class, born 2000-2010
Rosalind - someone involved with the Church
Roxy - Eastenders
Zara - try hard blonde.

Fivebeanchilli · 29/03/2022 22:34

Astrid - if over 10 slightly hippy vibe but if under 10 very middle class with sister called Margot
Dina - middle aged frumpy Greek lady
Gabrielle - gorgeous girl/woman (South American because the ones I know are!)
Rosalind - highly intelligent
Roxy - sorry but I see this as a bit down-market
Zara - cool trendy (a bit like I perceive the shop)

MoonSpoonSoon · 29/03/2022 22:51

Astrid - annoying, show off
Dina - cool, independent, possibly speaks several languages or has an unusual hobby
Gabrielle - arty, plays piano/flute, writes, a perfectionist
Rosalind - upper middle class, a bit stuck up, superficial
Roxy - cool, smokes
Zara - likes horses and collecting pencils

DarleneSnell · 29/03/2022 22:58

Astrid - vair snooty
Dina - Jersey Shore
Gabrielle - the singer. Love GabriellA
Rosalind - Shakespeare. Bit dry.
Roxy - young, fun. Nickname rather than full name.
Zara - Philips. It's sophisticated, I like it

Mumofgirls2017 · 30/03/2022 11:57

Astrid- know lots disagree but reminds me of ass and astringent
Dina- dinosaur
Gabrielle- bit dated somehow
Rosalind- elegant but can’t imagine baby with it. Wouldn’t be for me
Roxy- stripper name associations- sorry
Zara- quite like, associate with being quite upmarket, stylish

Lampyshady · 30/03/2022 13:51

Astrid-I May be immature but it sounds like ‘ass-turd’ or astride to me. I think you have to be actually Swedish for it to work, otherwise sounds a bit like you’re trying to be unique (and it’s fairly popular)
Dina- sounds like Diner, makes me think of American 50s housewives
Gabrielle-sounds incomplete, prefer Gabriella (but don’t like gabby). Works if you’re French.
Rosalind-I like it, Roz is a cool nickname and it has an unusual sound with the Lind ending. Shame she’d probably end us as Rosie

Roxy-sounds like a nickname (and not a nice one) for roxanne. Also reminds me of the backpack company and strippers.
Zara-really like it. Reminds me of a tanned blonde outgoing fun girl you’d meet at a festival

DogsAndGin · 30/03/2022 21:01

Astrid - asteroid
Dina - dinosaur
Gabrielle - ugly
Rosalind - Rosamund Pike
Roxy - prostitution
Zara - fashion shop
