Really struggling with girls names - help!!

AgathaOvercome · 28/03/2022 10:37

As the title says we are really struggling with girls names. We like classic girls names but none are standing out. We loved violet but with my accent it sounds like ‘vile - it’. Loved Juliet but DH cousins name so a no go. Anyone know anything similar? Surname ends in an -ee sounds so names like Emily / Ottilee are out. This is the short list:

Lauren
Lylah
Olivia ( bit overused ?)
Evelyn (is it also overused and have a niece called Evanne)

Argh why is it so hard! Hoping someone can come up with something we haven’t thought of!

Thanks all I’ve added

Iris
Meredith
Naomi
Laurel
Leah

To the list. Lydia reminds me of an absolutely spoilt brat I knew in uni so it’s ruined. I take the point about Lylah people are making. Unfortunately it sounds lovely with our surname and I can’t use lila spelling due to best friend using Lily.

Part of me thinks just go Olivia as it’s easy and hard to find fault with but I hoped I would love whatever girls name we picked rather than giving up out of exasperation and going with an easy option!

I’ll have a reread of all the names given again and run them past DH.

I think you’re worry wayyyy too much about other people. Wouldn’t stop me using a name if my friends had used it and definitely wouldn’t not use Lila because my friends kid is lily?!? It’s a totally different name.

Avalon

sixtiesbaby88 · 28/03/2022 14:22

Gloria, Faye, Lydia, Marisa

KirstenBlest · 28/03/2022 15:25

Lauren - dated and harsh-sounding
Lylah - dislike it and it's an ugly spelling
Olivia ( bit overused ?) - too popular for too long
Evelyn - dislike it and Eva+Ava but Eve is nice. Too similar to Evanne. Eevlin, Evvuh-lin, Ev-lin?

I'm another one who doesn't like Amelia
I only like Olivia on your list

scottishnames · 28/03/2022 18:15

Lauren Greatly prefer Laura; elegant and classic. Lorna is a similar name you hardly hear at all these days.
Lylah No. Dated plus fussy spelling. Sorry to be so blunt, but...
Olivia ( bit overused ?) It is still no 1 name (2020) in England and Wales, but it is pretty. I like previous posters' suggestions of Livia (ancient Roman) or Lydia (ancient Greek).
Evelyn Nothing wrong with it but so many 'Eve/Eva/Ava' etc names at present.

Simple but pretty names, which is the vibe I get from your list:
Emma, Jane, Julia, Clara, Ailsa, Iona, Flora, Stella, Elsa, Tess, Lucy, Diana, Hebe, Hera
Or perhaps this list from an excellent (and trustworthy) website, which has many more suggestions:

I just saw your update OP, your new list is miles better than your first one in my opinion. I love Iris, Naomi and Laurel. What about Merryn or Erin? Good luck.

AgathaOvercome · 28/03/2022 19:19

Thanks guys. Lots more food for thought now!

OP posts:
KirstenBlest · 28/03/2022 19:24

Iris - ok
Meredith - dislike it. It's a surname, an anglicised welsh boy's name
Naomi - the different pronunciations put me off. NAY-uh-mi is nice, NIGH-oh-mi and Nigh-OH-mi aren't
Laurel - not sure but it's much nicer than Lauren
Leah - ok

Fivebeanchilli · 28/03/2022 19:33

Lauren - I'm not keen and I don't think it's very classic. I prefer Laura.
Lylah- again I don't really see it as a classic. I much prefer Lyra (which also isn't classic but has some literary credentials!) Lylah spelling doesn't look nice!
Olivia ( bit overused ?) - popular but pretty. Probably less popular now than 15 years ago
Evelyn (is it also overused and have a niece called Evanne) - much more overused than Olivia I think, especially when you take into account the Evie /Eva / Eve as well....

Other ideas (sorry for repeats):
Lydia
Livia
Alice
Beatrice
Anna
Camilla
Cecily / Cecilia
Dorothea
Thea
Harriet
Iris
Miranda
Tabitha

Fivebeanchilli · 28/03/2022 19:33

Emilia
Emmeline

KirstenBlest · 28/03/2022 19:40

@Fivebeanchilli, look at names.darkgreener.com/#olivia

It's been the top name or #2 in England and Wales since 2008, and in the top 10 since 2001 so that's a lot of Olivias. It's the Sue or Sarah of its generation

Lauren - ok, very 90s
Lylah - no faddy, made up, undistinguished and blues with a zillion Lara/Lola/Leah/Leila/Lena/lyra/Luna type names
Olivia - nice but very overused
Evelyn - nice but very overused

Iris and Laurel are my favourites on your new list. Not a fan of Lylah.
What about
Hazel
Lyra
Lucinda
Maria
Jocelyn
Clare

Sushi7 · 29/03/2022 04:31

You’ll find an Olivia in every class. Evelyn and anything similar are also really popular. Lauren is a funny name because it used to be like Olivia! I prefer the spelling Leila to Lylah

Not keen on most of the names in your updated list. Meredith might be a good option because you won’t come across many!

Goldbar · 29/03/2022 05:21

I don't understand why your friend calling her DD Lily means that you can't use the much simpler 'Lila' or 'Lilah' spellings. If you love 'Lila', I would go for it and use the classic spelling. Lily and Lila are completely different names and sound totally different.

Other than Lila, what about:
Agnes
Chloe
Iris
Elsie
Greta
Hallie
Eliza
Juliana
Ottilie
Quinn

Mumofgirls2017 · 30/03/2022 16:28

Eleanor

Lorelei
Delilah

These three names are gorgeous. I like Olivia and Evelyn too but the popularity of them would put me off. Not so keen on the other names on your list.

I'd go with Lila, I don't see the issue with the friend. Or Lyla at a push. How about Delilah nn Lila?

Gingersnappy · 30/11/2022 17:25

I actually really like Lylah. I think if you both really like it, go for it
