Ok so I'm actually stressing over this.
Baby is now 5 days old and can't decide on his name! He can't unexpectedly 3 weeks early and we hadn't chosen a name.
I have had my heart set on Jude since I gave birth but worried it will be shortened to Jay or J!
I also like Elijah.
Thoughts?

The only Judes I know (one adult, one child) are always Jude. Not known them to be Jay.

SylvanianFrenemies · 21/03/2022 17:27

Both nice.
Jude unlikely to be shortened to J.

irishfarmer · 21/03/2022 17:31

I don't know any Jude's but I don't think I'd shorten it to Jay or J. Congratulations on your baby :)

Lilaclavenders · 21/03/2022 17:40

I prefer Elijah.

Congratulations

Elspethelf · 21/03/2022 18:11

I wouldn’t expect Jude to be shortened. Go with the name you love! Congratulations

Mountainbear · 21/03/2022 18:26

I like Jude. Unlikely to be shortened. Not keen on Elijah. Luca? Zachary? Joel?

miltonj · 21/03/2022 18:39

Call him Jude!! Or Jude Elijah if you want both. Congratulations 🎉

canyoubelievethat · 21/03/2022 19:06

I like Jude.

chelev9 · 21/03/2022 19:11

Thanks everybody! ❤️

Middle name will be Michael.

I think Jude is most likely to be just called Jude

Elijah is also nice, as is the (likely) shortening of Eli

WeasilyPleased · 21/03/2022 22:15

Jude Michael is a very handsome name. Congratulations.

Flyingteaspoon · 21/03/2022 22:23

Congratulations. I wouldnt imagine Jude getting shortened to J or Jay, unless you wanted it to be. If you have your heart set on it, I honestly wouldn’t let this put you off at all. I don’t see Jude being shortened at all with it being so short anyhow. I love both your choices as well as Michael for his middle name.

Jude & Elijah are both lovely names. Michael is also nice!

I don’t think you have to worry about Jude being shortened to. I’ve looked after a few and all have just been called Jude - except one who was called ‘moody Judie’ by his big sister!

Fl0w3ry · 22/03/2022 10:42

I would never shorten the name Jude, really like the name. Elijah I dislike the Eli shortening.

Trinacham · 22/03/2022 11:22

Do people usually shorten one syllable names? 🤔 surely the whole point of shortening a name is to make it one syllable!

RiverRats · 22/03/2022 11:24

Jude won’t be shortened. Jude is a lovely name, and Jude Michael is very handsome. I’d go with Jude

KirstenBlest · 22/03/2022 11:29

I really like Michael but not keen on Jude or Elijah.

Jude is more likely to be lengthened to Judey/Judas than it is to be shortened to Jay

beetree1 · 22/03/2022 11:52

First of all congratulations. I know a little boy called Jude and no one calls him anything but that. It's never even crossed my mind to shorten it.

Also really like Elijah. Good luck on choosing!
