Elina or Eileen

Hi. I was a fan of Eline (eh-leen) but encountered that there could be a confusion with the pronounciation and it could get mistaken for other names. Then i thought about Eileen and Elina. Cant decide between both. Does Elina fit a grown woman? Is it too girly and too cute? Does it sound "professional"? How do you picture an Eileen, an Elina? I like that you can do Lina as a nickname for Elina. Eileen doesnt have good nickname choices. Eileen on other hand rolls better off the tongue but am concerned about I lean jokes or she'll get teased with the song come on eileen often, even read sth. About cum on eileen as a sexual joke. Never ever thought about that before. Is this really a thing? When i speak them out loud i have a preference for Eileen but the mentioned negative points are quite heavy. Can't decide!! I like the meaning of those names and like to honor someone with one of them.

I've never heard of Elina.
Eileen wouldn't be my choice, but I don't mind it. You can use Lina as an nn for Eileen if you want.

I prefer Elina. I find Eileen too old fashioned and boring.

Elina is lovely.

There is a Ukrainian tennis player called Elina Svitolina, who always comes across so well too.

legalseagull · 20/03/2022 19:32

Pronounced "E-lean-a'? I like it. Or is it a weird spelling of Elenor

CremeEggThief · 20/03/2022 19:43

The tennis player pronounces it more like Ee/leena.

Luredbyapomegranate · 20/03/2022 20:32

Elina I guess because Eileen is dire (like Maureen)

Elina is quite nice but she’ll end up one of a billion Ellies, and it will get confused with Eleanor/Elena a lot, and people may pronounce it in ways you I don’t want, all of which which might be annoying

Ellen is an option

@CremeEggThief

Elina is lovely.

There is a Ukrainian tennis player called Elina Svitolina, who always comes across so well too.

I've also heard of Elina through her.

I think Elina is a lovely name. In the UK, I think it would sound rather exotic and different, in a good way. I can't imagine why it wouldn't sound professional. I mean, Teddy and Sonny are in the top 100 (!) for boys, and Elina seems a lot more sophisticated to me than either of those.

I want to like Eileen but it just seems so dated to me. The association with the song also bothers me.

I adore Eileen - I reckon you're ahead of the curve on this one!

KirstenBlest · 22/03/2022 11:16

Eileen. It's lovely

I read Eline as Ee-lyne

Fivelittlemonkeys · 23/03/2022 15:43

I read Eline as Eh-leen .

I love Elina and I would pronounce it as Eh-leen-na.

I am not fan of Eileen, it's a bit complicated the way it is written and Eline is the same pronunciation pretty much.

Why did you say that pronunciation of Eline is difficult? How else could it be pronounced other than Eh-leen?

WordOfTheDay · 23/03/2022 21:37

Eileen is Irish and is a variant of Elizabeth.
Eline is Dutch or Danish and is a variant of Helen.

Maybe one or the other of those associations will sway you one or the other way.

Go for Eileen, its a lovely name and have the pronunciation problems of Elina.
