Orla

Nora is just depressing

But prefer Oona or Honor to either

nearlyspringyay · 19/03/2022 08:09

I've never heard an Awla pronunciation and I'm in SE London.

Prefer Nora, never did Nora Jones any harm!

Guineapigssweak · 19/03/2022 08:10

Neither far nicer names to chose from.

I'm in SE London and I would pronounce it this way. The r wouldn't be pronounced. How would you pronounce it?

Well, maybe more Oh-la — the lack of rhoticity meaning the ‘r’ isn’t voiced.
cafedesreves · 19/03/2022 08:19

I would rhyme Orla with taller

PineForestsAndSunshine · 19/03/2022 08:19

I don’t usually comment on the baby names threads, but had to say how much I like both names.

Sadly, I’m no help because I can’t choose between them!

Nora. I love it and kids these days don't watch much midsummer wine!

Orla always sounds to much like Paula to me

Rathmobhaile · 19/03/2022 08:27

Orla is nicer but I'm Irish so would say it "Orr-la". Is thst the way you would prefer it? Its an excellent point to look at how local accent influences what she would be called by her school friends and teachers etc.

As for Nora - its a no. Just dull I think. But I don't fibd this trend of putting names that are currently found on senior generations great. So for me thats names like Nora, Edith, Wilfred for example. Some names have their time and maybe thats a good thing. (I'm also thinking of all those 1970's Sharons and Traceys tbh)

speckledeggshell · 19/03/2022 10:18

Nora maybe but neither are my cuppa. Nora makes me think of ignore her and snorer Orla make me think of oral and all of said in Cockney accent. look at orla dat sammun Dave (he works at the fish stall)

Carlos18 · 19/03/2022 11:34

Yes @Rathmobhaile it would be Orr-La where we are x

Orla. Nora is just super frumpy and depressing.

midsomermurderess · 19/03/2022 12:43

I prefer Nora. And who of your daughter's peers will know of Nora Batty? Heck, at my age, I barely do.

DramaAlpaca · 19/03/2022 13:42

Orla, as long as it's pronounced correctly which OP says it will be.

Not Nora, it's so ugly and frumpy. Someone upthread described it as fresh and modern but to my ears it's the opposite.

Pieceofpurplesky · 19/03/2022 13:49

Nora is beautiful and anyone under 20 will have no clue who Nora Batty is.
Nora Jones?
Orla pretty common in kids where I am.

Noa
Nina
Nula
Nia

RedRobin100 · 19/03/2022 13:52

Sorry can’t help I like both. As PPs say would depend on locality and accent.

My friends 4 year old is Nora. Really suits her and is not frumpy un the slightest

FayCarew · 19/03/2022 14:04

Orla, but I'm not keen on either

Blondefancy · 19/03/2022 14:05

Orla is lovely! I used to have a friend called Nona 😊 I prefer that to Nora I think!

FayCarew · 19/03/2022 14:09

Orla is ok in an irish accent, and Norah is nicer than Nora

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 19/03/2022 14:11

Orla. I used to know an Orna, which I think I prefer.

FolkSongSweet · 22/03/2022 09:44

Yes Nora, because Awla is rubbish.

SabiRiver · 22/03/2022 10:06

I much prefer the name Orla. When is your baby due?

axolotlfloof · 22/03/2022 10:10

Love Nora.
DS and I are watching upload with Nora in. DS would think it was a perfectly normal name and has never heard of Nora Batty.
If you don't live in Holmfirth, go for it.

ellecf21 · 22/03/2022 20:57

Love Orla! Both are nice though, Orla just feels a bit more modern.
