How would you pronounce the name Eva?

Ee-Va? or Eh-Va?

Then, how would you pronounce the name Evie?

Ee-Vie? or Eh-Vie?

Ee-va
Ee-vie

SemperIdem · 17/03/2022 10:08

Eva = ee-va in the Uk. Is pronounced Ava in most European countries. If you want eh-va then the Welsh name Efa is what you’re after.

Evie = ee-vee

purpleme12 · 17/03/2022 10:08

Ee-va
Ee-vie

But then I've never heard those names pronounced any other way

Cotswoldmama · 17/03/2022 10:21

Only her heard them pronounced ee-va and ee-vie

demoness · 17/03/2022 13:16

Eva = EE-va if British or Irish. Ay-va or Eh-va if European.

Evie = EE-vee

BarryKentPoet · 17/03/2022 13:19

Ee-va

I know Evie's pronounced both ee-vie and ehh-vie. The latter is short for Evelyn though, in this case.

MsTSwift · 17/03/2022 14:38

I really would avoid all Eve names! They are insanely common. At one stage one third of the girls in my child’s class were named a variant of Eve. It got terribly confusing not to mention so dull. Seriously rethink most of my Eve mum friends (there are several) have name regret.

Meandthesky · 17/03/2022 18:32

Ee-va
Ee-vie

Never heard either of them pronounced with an Eh sound

WholeMilkIsMinging · 17/03/2022 20:07

I know an Eh-vie who must be in her 60s or 70s. All the little one's I know are Ee-vie.

Andacherryonthetop · 17/03/2022 22:07

Ee sound for both.

As pp has said, Efa is welsh and so would be eh-va. Or you could choose Ever as a name if you preferred that sound at the start

Lilaclavenders · 18/03/2022 14:01

In the UK I'd pronounce Eva as Eeva.

In Germany I'd pronounce it as Eh-fa

Luredbyapomegranate · 19/03/2022 12:21

It would be the first option in the UK in both cases

ThirdElephant · 19/03/2022 12:24

Ee-va (my inner voice then adds, 'Wall-e!')

Ee-vee

lakeswimmer · 19/03/2022 19:04

Ee-va

Ee - vee

I've got a teen Eva. Whenever it's mentioned on MN it's dismissed being a very common name but that's not been our experience. There weren't/aren't any at her primary school, secondary school, FE College course or any of her many hobby groups, one of which included kids from all over the region.

MsTSwift · 19/03/2022 19:14

God there are loads here (south west). Mine are teens most classes have several Eve/Eva/Evie’s never come across such a popular name!
