Changing my name

I've always wanted to change my name, it just doesn't suit me. I feel it's a little dull and tweet. I'm also named after a NC family member and I hate this fact. I have always fancied a name that's a little bit vintage, ever since I was a child! I wanted to know what sort of person do you imagine when you hear the following names:
Esther
Martha
Eliza
Iris
Annie
Phoebe
Rose

Thank you!

Rose is the nicest of them IMHO.

Hikoridikori · 17/03/2022 09:20

I love Esther and Iris. Strong, independent woman.

Eliza is feminine.

Annie is ok, almost classic, I prefer Anna.

Phoebe and Martha are a bit harsh sounding, more tomboy names.

Rose/Rosie ... please not another one! Very sugary!

HomeHomeInTheRange · 17/03/2022 09:23

I think they are all great names OP.

I can't seem to disassociate Esther from Esther Ranzen.

I too changed my Christian name.
I think you must pick one that 'speaks' to you.
But, fwiw, Esther to me is Biblical, Martha is Handmaid's Tale, Eliza is Pygmalion, Iris was a strong writer, Annie is an American musical, Phoebe is 'Friends' & Rose = ''Titanic??
All massive clichéd word associations but that's what they bring up for me. Of your list, I like the elegance of 'Eliza' but all of them are pleasant / good names.

The 'new name' I chose 25 years ago is now very common - would that bother you? My family have refused to use it ever since - would that bother you? (things to consider maybe)?

I hope you find one to settle on x

Esther - religious, sensible, meek
Martha - housewife, practical
Eliza - cockney flower seller!
Iris - flower, rainbow goddess
Annie - lovely name, lots of different associations with it
Phoebe - Friends
Rose - also lovely name, strong person, timeless, self contained

I like Esther, Eliza and Iris. I also like Hester which has a similar flavour and was my great grandmother's name.

Sorry posted too soon.

All three (four) of those names sound like strong, striking women to me.

FayCarew · 17/03/2022 12:06

Esther - gentle
Martha - industrious
Eliza - doolittle
Iris - old lady
Annie - spirited
Phoebe - zany
Rose - quiet

I like rather than dislike all of them but Iris would be my pick. It has a nice meaning and sounds very elegant too.

RainbowMum11 · 17/03/2022 23:53

I like them all, and know people with pretty much all of them.
