Clementine has swiftly moved up my and she's name list after a lot of agonizing 😂. Thoughts? Is it a bit out there? TIA!

I only know one Clementine and she says it to rhyme with Caroline and Valentine

The fruit is Clement-een

Lilaclavenders · 17/03/2022 17:41

You could shorten to Tina?

SundayTeatime · 17/03/2022 17:49

The fruit can be pronounced either way. Both are accepted pronunciations in British English according to the dictionary.

Clementine is aFrench name and should rhyme with other similar names like Josephine and Christine. Churchill’s wife was Clementine -een.

Pemba · 17/03/2022 18:04

It's like Caroline maybe? French origin and I believe its pronounced Carol-een in French, but we normally say Carol - eyne (rhymes with wine).

Interestingly (to me anyway!) there's a street in Leicester called Catherine Street, which is traditionally pronounced cath-ryne Street, again rhyming with wine. So maybe the 'rhyne' 'tyne' "ending is the old English way to pronounce these types of name.

Love it!

loopycurtains · 17/03/2022 19:00

@Luredbyapomegranate

It’s not at all out there, it’s quite popular.

I quite like it, but I think it has shades of tweeness like Jemima, Tabitha and Eloise, so not sure I’d use it personally

It was my top choice but exH vetoed so went with Jemima instead. Grin

If the fruit can be pronounced either way surely the name can be, too? Mrs Churchill is a famous example but there are others in the UK who pronounce it with the ‘tyne’ pronunciation.

@Luluuuuuuuuuu85

Seems to be quite marmite! I would probably call her Mimi rather than Clemmie.
And I call Jemima 'Mimi'. OP, we're clearly on the same page when it comes to names!
Luluuuuuuuuuu85 · 17/03/2022 19:07

Good taste 😉 I find different people's opinions and views of names really interested! Whilst trying to get offended 😂

Just don’t get your drunken, away-with-the-fairies husband to go and register the birth. He’ll forget what she’s called, and come up with what (to his mind) would be the nearest approximation, and you’ll end up with a Marmalade.

Thank you so much for reminding me of this (and the wonderful Charlotte Coleman).

I love it! Had it on my list but DH thought it was awful 🙈

HeadPain · 18/03/2022 14:28

I like it yess

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 18/03/2022 16:47

I always look with interest about the Clementine threads @Luluuuuuuuuuu85

My DD Clementine is in her 20's and was very much a novelty when I had her-which I was pleased about. It really suits her.

Seems to be getting a bit more popular-but often appears on threads of "names I would pick if I was brave enough" or other such name threads-

I still absolutely love it to this day-she gets lots of really nice comments from ppl-and she does use nickname Clemmie she has never been called phlegmie I think Mimi a very sweet nickname.

Good luck-fingers crossed for a baby Clementine!!

ThistleWigz · 19/03/2022 07:41

Clementine is my 7 week old daughters middle name. It was very nearly her first but we felt we couldn’t use it for the following reasons:

  1. We live in the north east and “clems” are mens testicles!
  2. I am a teacher and I asked my year 8 form what they thought and the lads all said “what like the fruit - you can’t name a kid after fruit”. They said she’d get picked on and that upset me.
  3. It would probably get shortened to Clemmie or Clem which I’m not that keen on.
  4. I think I would feel a bit embarrassed shouting it out in the park up here.

If I was in London I probably wouldn’t have thought twice about using it, but it just wouldn’t work up here. So it’s her middle name because I still really love it.

Lilaclavenders · 19/03/2022 11:15

“clems” are mens testicles!

Really? Shock

Roselilly36 · 19/03/2022 11:21

I love it, gorgeous.

Luluuuuuuuuuu85 · 19/03/2022 11:35

Haha I am now even more confused! Does anyone have an alternative they used instead of Clementine?

OP posts:
PoxyAndIKnowIt · 19/03/2022 15:56

Oh, yes, but I thought that was just an Australian pronunciation but everyone would use -teen in the UK.

No everyone doesn't! The two Clementines i know are both pronounced to rhyme with pine.

(And the song's not Australian!)

PoxyAndIKnowIt · 19/03/2022 15:57

Sorry, meant to add... I think its a lovely name, OP!

lovebabynames · 09/08/2022 00:19

Bit late now but I've heard the nickname Minnie used for Clementine which is adooorable
