Are Finley and Jack nice boys?

There are so few boy names I like. Jack and Finley are currently my two faves - I'm not a fan of unusual names so being very common does not bother me but I don't actually know any Jacks or Finleys myself. Are the Jack and Finleys you know nice boys?

The name has no bearing on whether they are "nice boys"

FattyFatCakes · 16/03/2022 15:20

Nope! I have never met a nice Jack I’m afraid. The ones I know are all very boisterous (rough) and unkind.
Don’t know any Finleys but I love the name.

Celoo · 16/03/2022 15:20

Ha, I know. But surely you associate names with people you know. For example I loved the name Joshua, until every Josh I met was an absolute weapon.

I can imagine a Jack being a bit... yeah. I'm glad someone else likes Finley Smile

I have an 18 yr old Jack and he’s always been a pain in the bum ha. He’s been diagnosed with ADHD . I still LOVE his name .

Mammy55 · 16/03/2022 15:24

My son is Jack and he is the cheekiest boy ever. Named after his great grandad who was the cheekiest man😂. He is kind, respectful and loving. He’s a good son and friend and a trustworthy lad. But you’ll get the people saying everyone called Jack is an arse. The people who make comments about the name Jack are probably the same people who defend the term Karen so ignore them 😂

thelittlestrhino · 16/03/2022 15:24

Loads of Finleys/Finlays up here in Scotland. All the ones I've taught have been real characters (not in a bad way, just rather full on!)

GirlsTalk250 · 16/03/2022 15:26

Only Jacks I’ve met have been particularly rough and tumble as toddlers. We didn’t stay acquainted long enough for me to tell you how they’ve matured!

FattyFatCakes · 16/03/2022 15:27

@Ditzyduck I have an Oscar and he and ALL
the other Oscars in the world are incredibly badly behaved! Grin

OchonAgusOchonOh · 16/03/2022 15:27

I know a couple of Jack's who are lovely. Both adults now and w hole lovely as children too, one was a tad boisterous, to say the least. I don't know how his parents survived it.

I only know one Finley. He was a nasty, devious brat who spent his time bullying other children. I haven't had any dealings with him as an adult but I doubt he's much better as he hadn't improved throughout secondary school. .

Hoppinggreen · 16/03/2022 15:29

Jack tends to be a bit cocky and a bit Alpha. Probably captain of the football team
Finley not so much

SisterCellophane · 16/03/2022 15:29

Jack's a lovely name! I wanted to call my son Jack but my OH said it was too common :( (I don't even think it's that common any more) I think it's a classic and it's popular because it's nice!
Finley I can take or leave tbh.

justaweeone · 16/03/2022 15:33

I've got an 18 year old who's a Finlay, I may be a tiny bit biased but he is a lovely boy!Grin

Marylou62 · 16/03/2022 15:36

Ha! What tosh.. I have an adult Jack who is loved and respected by everyone.. He's a fine young man.. Only the other day we were stopped by his old teacher who was so proud to hear about what he's been up to... Now his school bully Jamie.. Well that's another story.
OP.. There will always be totally different characters with the same name.. Pick it because you like it.. My Jacko is Ace...

NoddingTulip · 16/03/2022 15:38

I know 2 Finleys who are about 8yrs old and both are rather shy, quiet, polite boys.

I know several Jacks ranging from 6ish-adult there are a good mix of characters from complete arseholes to absolute sweethearts. The one I like best is ds1s friend, he's 20 yrs old and incredibly opinionated and stubborn but is also a kind, thoughtful, dependable and trustworthy guy.

2anddone · 16/03/2022 15:38

Worked in childcare for 25 years the Jacks I have come across are sweet but spoilt the Finley's are either drippy or little buggers!

autumngirlaki · 16/03/2022 15:39

I have met several Jacks and they were all a bit rough and one of them had lots of troubles with the law tbh.

It was the number one name in the country for a few years so there will be many Jacks around and some of them will be nice. Just depends. I imagine more of a soccer player, muscular, rough, gets into trouble.

Don't know any Finleys. Finlay is the Celtic classic and Finley is more trendy-surname-name to me so in my mind Finley would be a trendy baby and Finlay I imagine more as a handsome, kind man in his 20s so I would pick Finlay.

In the end it doesn't really matter and I wouldn't judge someone for their name.

Thanks for all the comments who have just answered as they find. It's entertaining reading through your experiences with your Jacks and Finleys. (Oscar would be in there too if it didn't remind me of an old pet).

I am not simple enough to think that if a stranger on the internet says Jack is a brat then I shouldn't use that name. I am a first time expecting mum with a lot of idle time on my hands in an empty office and an overactive brain. It's a light hearted chat - surely that's understandable. It's not that serious.

Unfortunately Oscar reminds me of Oscar Pistorius :( His trial got lots of attention here a few years ago. Then there's Sesame Street's bin Oscar. Finlay is definitely my fave.

I named my Oscar after my first dog so don’t let that put you off
Manekinek0 · 16/03/2022 16:01

Finlay is what I would think of as the "correct" spelling. Most kids I have met with these names have been lovely.

thehornetsnest · 16/03/2022 16:03

Since when does a name define a personality? What a ridiculous thread.

HampshireMummyof2 · 16/03/2022 16:17

I have a Finley. He is very cheeky but with a good heart ♥️.

Bootothegoose · 16/03/2022 16:21

I adore both names.

I would have loved to name DS Jack but we have a close relative with that name.

He ended up being Finn and I love it on him. Cheeky, wild but sensitive and kind. I know another couple of Finn/Finley and they’re all lovely.

ISmellBurnings · 16/03/2022 16:22

The ones I know are.
