Are Finley and Jack nice boys?

There are so few boy names I like. Jack and Finley are currently my two faves - I'm not a fan of unusual names so being very common does not bother me but I don't actually know any Jacks or Finleys myself. Are the Jack and Finleys you know nice boys?

I love Finley.
I do find Jack a little boring but it's a lovely name to suit all ages.
Can't go wrong with either.

Luredbyapomegranate · 16/03/2022 18:43

They are both quite nice names, although very overused.

Jack has been so epically popular for so long, you are going to run into some people who have known some bratty (and worse) Jacks, Finlay probably less so.

I think if it worries you I’d try and find less popular options.

inmyslippers · 16/03/2022 18:46

No they terrorise the estate with Jayden and Cameron

ablisha · 16/03/2022 19:08

I have a Finley who was very nearly a Jack! I am a teacher so find names tough, but would always be happy with those 2

LolaSparkle · 16/03/2022 19:11

I have a Jack - he's almost 13 now and he's loving, affectionate and loyal - also has a low attention span and is known to have bouts of boisterous energy that quickly turning into bouts of hormonal melt downs haha!🤣
I also have a one year old Harry that is just the most beautiful and calm personality but is not afraid to climb anything and everything t 🤣
I have a nephew Finlay who is the same age as my Jack and is incredibly handsome and super kind and loving! 😁

ElvenDreamer · 16/03/2022 19:42

I know 3 Jacks who are without exception sweet, thoughtful, academic types.

Fivebeanchilli · 16/03/2022 20:16

All the Finlays I know (aged 21 to 8) are adorable.
Bizarrely most of the Jacks I know are annoying but I do know a couple of lovely ones too. I think because Jack was so popular a few years ago there are all sorts of Jacks out there!

GoodnightJude1 · 16/03/2022 20:30

I have a Finley. He’s the kindest, sweetest most polite little lad I’ve ever known…and thankfully he’s mine Grin

M0rT · 16/03/2022 20:36

I don't know any Finleys, loads of Jacks of different ages and personalities. One of them has a very high IQ, so there's a sign for you Wink

Kanaloa · 17/03/2022 00:52

I’ve looked after so so many Jacks. Some are naughty, some lovely. One Jack I always remember was very very shy. All different children with basically just the name in common.

I’ve looked after one Finley and one Finlay. Finlay was a punishment for something I’ve done in my past life, he was so so naughty. Finley was just a normal boy, usually nice and sometimes a bit cheeky!

For me i wouldn’t use Jack just because I’ve met so many. It got to the point where you always had Jack Johnson and Jack McDonald and Jack Green etc etc.

You sound both nasty and stupid.
SemperIdem · 17/03/2022 10:13

I really like Finley/Finlay. Not met one over the age of 6 though I’m sure they do exist!

Jack is just such a bland name. Whilst I appreciate it’s popular, why is a mystery to me personally.

Agree with you re Josh’s op!

NinaDefoe · 17/03/2022 10:15

Yes to Jack
No to Oscar & Finlay/Finley!

pinkpanther84 · 17/03/2022 10:19

My 4 year old son is called Jack, obviously I love the name. And surprisingly he is the only Jack in his year of 60 children. My Jack is sweet, affectionate, a little bit cheeky. I think the name will suit him throughout his life

PoleFairy · 17/03/2022 10:21

Let's just say I know a Jack intimately. Hes a lovely, kind man who everyone likes but if you speak to his mother he was a terror until he was about 21 Grin

derryrose1980 · 17/03/2022 10:29

As a teacher most Jacks are mischievous, James' end up as head boys, Jamie's are pains in the bums and Joshua's/Josh's are the ones that want to make me leave teaching. I know that is stereotyping to the max but having taught secondary for 15 years there is a trend!

madelinemouse · 17/03/2022 10:34

I have a Jack. And it's because it's such a common name that I love it.

When we registered him there was a lovely old lady in the registry office with her daughter. She asked what we were naming the baby and when I told her, she welled up and said her late husband (who's death they were registering) was called Jack.

There are so many Jacks that it encompasses so many personality types. I also love that when you read the name you have no idea of the age of the person - I know Jacks in their 90s, their 50s, their 30s and their teens. As well as my preschooler!

My Jack is cheeky and mischievous, but not naughty (his brother is, so I would admit it if he was!)

Cotswoldmama · 17/03/2022 10:48

My son is friends with a finlay and a jack. They seem like friendly sweet boys. Obviously their name doesn't make them that way but if I hear those names I would think of them, so make a good association.

abc4321 · 17/03/2022 15:39

Confession time, I have a Jack and (as a teenager), he's a naughty little bugger. I don't think I can blame the name though. His older brother is the polar opposite, very well behaved and easy!

Lovemusic33 · 17/03/2022 15:44

They are nice names as long as you don’t mind your ds possibly having several others with the same name in his class at school, they are quite popular. I know quite a few Jack’s, and several Finley’s. Other popular names are Harry, Alfie, Edward (Eddie) and Oliver. I quite like the name Adam, not sure if it’s used much anymore? I think classic boys names will always be ‘nice’ but also a bit boring due to popularity.

Icecreamandapplepie · 17/03/2022 15:49

We have a Jack. He is the most gentle, thoughtful child!

I also like Finley so think we have similar tastes.

soulinablackberrypie · 17/03/2022 20:22

I've known so many Jacks that it's impossible to say. There were some well behaved ones, some that were a bit silly and hyper, but I can't remember a really horrible one.

At the other extreme, I've only ever known one Finley and he was rather irritating, but I still like the name. It sounds nice and I don't think it's fair to condemn a name on the grounds of one individual.

Finlay would be my pick of the two, although I prefer the spelling Finlay. I also like just plain Finn, in fact I like that even better.

Apologies if you were joking. There is a comment upthread saying they ‘terrorise the estate with Jayden and Cameron’ so it’s not like your comment was obviously a joke.
Kanaloa · 17/03/2022 20:55

Sorry that was yours. Point is it’s not very clearly a joke as it’s a common thing on mumsnet to be said earnestly.
