Ilma

Is Ilma cute or too grandma-ish?

Stumbled across a list from Bosnia and Herzegowina and it's a very popular name there. It is also Finnish, means "air". So very international.

I think it is sort of sweet.

Is it actually used as a name in Finland or is it merely a Finnish word?

As someone based in the UK, it just sounds like someone saying "ill ma", albeit it quickly.

I don't like the ill sound. Have you thought about Alma?

Used, but Ilmi and Ilmatar are more common. They are all old names.

Unless you're from Bosnia and Herzegowina or Finland, I'd look for another name

Rekorderlig88 · 13/03/2022 21:10

I misread it as lama. And can't unsee that

intheblightgarden · 13/03/2022 21:16

It's perfectly nice but the I and the l next to each other at the start make it hard to read.

I agree Alma is a great alternative, I think it's underused.

Salvia89 · 16/03/2022 13:46

I read it as Llama too! Love Alma though

intheblightgarden · 16/03/2022 21:02

Alba is also nice

alexdgr8 · 16/03/2022 21:04

no. no. no.
looks like llama.

tokyo1 · 16/03/2022 21:11

I had a great gran called Alma which I think it's lovely and may use it for a future DC. Not keen on Ilma unless you have links.

peaceinourtime · 16/03/2022 22:08

I appreciate its roots but on first glance it really does look like Llama. Naming a child that name will really be setting her up to be called Llama either with intent or by accident.

Kanaloa · 17/03/2022 00:43

I like Alma better. I think it looks nicer and it’s more familiar. Also if you’re not actually from Bosnia/Finland etc I wouldn’t pick an unfamiliar name from one of those countries.
