Álvaro (we are a Spanish/English family). Ideally pronounced AL-varo but accept in UK it might be al-VAH-ro. Just interested in what nicknames might work for this.

Is it for a boy? Maybe Alvo? Or Alvi. If a girl I would go Ally

I wondered if we could get away with Alvin? Or is that too much of a name in its own right?

I can't think of any that would genuinely work. Except for maybe Álvo. I am not a fan of the name, I think it is too old fashioned but if you love it you should use it.

You can't get away with Alvin, it's like naming a daughter Eleanor and calling her Ellen.

You seem to not really like Álvaro if you want to find something else to call him by so badly? Is your family putting pressure on you? Can't you use it as a middle name such as Elliott Álvaro (or whatever you like)?

Turniptracker · 13/03/2022 12:32

Nope no pressure. I was just interested as it's one name on our shortlist where nicknames don't come so easily

What would it be in Spain? I know an Ignacio, nn Nacho. Not what most Brits would go to, here it'd probably be Iggy.

NuffSaidSam · 13/03/2022 12:36

Alvie is really cute for when he's little.

It would be Al by the time he got to secondary school though.

Alvin is just a different name so I think you'd struggle using it as a nickname.

Ally.
