Fergus / Also thoughts on matching sibling names

What do you think of the name Fergus? It's a name I'm considering. I also like the potential nicknames Fergie and Gus.

Also, we're likely going to have just two children but there's a potential for three. Our first child has a traditional Scottish name and so if we used Fergus that would be two with Scottish names. Would that be tying us to Scottish names? I mean I get that you can use any name but I'm just thinking it might be seen as a little odd if you have two children with "matching" names and the third is off in a different direction.

I have a Fergus and never regretted the choice
It’s a bit different but nice and solid and not teasable at school age
Works for little ones and grown ups.
No one has ever called him anything other than his full name though, I think it’s just a short enough name that it never happened.
His brother also has a Gaelic name but dd is completely off piste, never seemed an issue

I like Fergus but view it as Irish.Fraser is a nice Scottish name as is Innes

theremustonlybeone · 10/03/2022 09:58

I should say is just because the only folks I know called Fergus are Irish !

HoldingTheDoor · 10/03/2022 09:59

Two Scottish names and one that isn't is fine imo. But Fergus is awful. It has such an unattractive sound.

I knew brothers called Fergus & Theo when I was little.

emmathedilemma · 10/03/2022 10:14

I love it, all the ones I know are really nice kids too.

I like the name Fergus. It was on my names list, as was Felix, which I think goes well enough, without being too matchy.

Olga03 · 10/03/2022 11:24

I like it :)

I love Fergus.
Kids are individuals, give them their own names. But I do like matching sets when I am wrangling under 8s.

I love Fergus!!! If siblings have Scottish names then, yes, it would make sense to continue with the theme.

Eg Callum, Fergus, Ewan works, but Callum, Fergus, Pablo would seem odd Grin

soulinablackberrypie · 12/03/2022 09:50

I like Fergus.

I think you can use two Scottish names and a non-Scottish one (you can use whatever names you like) but how much people would notice depends on how obscure the Scottish names are, and how plausible the non-Scottish one would be in Scotland.

Kirsty, Fergus and Robert - I wouldn't bat an eyelid. Kirsty is popular outside Scotland, Fergus is at least familiar outside Scotland, and Robert is popular in Scotland even if it's not of specifically Scottish origin.

Morag, Fergus and Gabriel - I wouldn't actually think there was anything wrong with it, but I would notice the difference.

Luredbyapomegranate · 12/03/2022 12:36

I like it
I don’t think it ties you to a third Scottish name, assuming it was a fairly traditional European name eg Morven, Fergus and Elizabeth or Iona, Fergus and Laurence

Sarah13xx · 12/03/2022 12:42

I love Fergus, it was on our list 😊 We went for a different Scottish name in the end up but I think we are now going to go for the Scottish theme. I don’t think one ties you to anything but two I’d say does slightly. There are a lot of Scottish names though that aren’t necessarily the obvious ones, ours is a theme of Scottish places and we’ve always had a boy and girl name ready so have used the boy name. Not sure what we’d call our second child if they were a boy though, haven’t thought that far ahead 😂 Fergus has the kind old name brought back round again vibe though, it’s a cool name!

I like Fergus. I have two children with Irish names and are expecting our third. I personally feel we have tied ourselves into irish names now, so I think if you have 2 DC with Scottish names you should think of what you might call the third. Just my opinion I know some people couldn't care less!

I really like Fergus. I can’t imagine a horrible Fergus. He sounds like a really gentle soul, but at the same time rather rugged and masculine. Very cute for a little boy, but it works well for a grown man too. It doesn’t matter at all if you have two Scottish names and one not. They don’t need to match, they’re not furniture.
