Love name Jacob but not nickname Jake
Is it likely to be shortened, has anyone had any experience?

My Jacob has always been Jacob, not Jake.
Sort of helped that there was another Jacob in his class all the way through primary school who wanted to be Jake, so it helped differentiate between them for my DS to keep his full name.

Jacob is lovely. I've never heard it shortened to Jake, which is a name in its own right.

toptomatoes · 08/03/2022 11:34

My Jacob is still Jacob at 11 but some others do shorten, particularly when there are multiples in a group. We picked names where we didn’t hate the shortenings in case the child wanted to shorten at some point.

We have an older family member Jacob and he is known as Jack.

I think it's definitely likely to be shortened by friends at school, but that doesn't mean you ever have to shorten it yourself. I'd still use it if it's your favourite :)

Really lovely name. I know one adult one who many of his family called Jakie as a child but is Jacob now. I know a tiny baby one too who I haven't meet yet so don't know if he is a nn.

We are based in Scotland, so here also Jakey means an alcoholic.
Would you give up on this name if you dislike the nickname Jake?

His brothers name is Oscar

Other option we consider is George, the name that also cannot be shortened

George is often shortened to "Dod" in Scotland for some reason, just in case you weren't aware.

We have never used the shortened version. All my DCs have names that could be shortened, but we never have. As teens, their friends do and that's fine but we have asked them and they don't want us to do it as it would be wierd after so long!
ShineTogether · 09/03/2022 20:03

Beautiful name.
If you always use the full name then a shortened version won't stick as a nickname- unless he wants it Grin

Luredbyapomegranate · 09/03/2022 22:51

Don’t use it if you don’t like the shortening. It’s pretty likely.

silverpinecones · 09/03/2022 23:13

Ultimately if he decides he wants to shorten to Jake in the end it will happen. But equally I know quite a few people who have kept using their full name throughout their lives and avoided shortening's eg David, Rebecca, Jonathan, Stephen so if you (and then he) likes Jacob then it's not impossible to ask people to use the full name! It's not like it's really long or difficult

silverpinecones · 09/03/2022 23:14

Also I do really like Jacob but also don't mind Jake. What about Jay as a nickname?
