Romola?

Hi everyone, struggling to pick just one name (Romola, Tabitha, and Veronica high on our list), but lately I'm leaning toward Romola - pronounced RAHM-o-la. Feminine version of Romulus, who founded Rome. What do you think?

FYI Baby will have Italian surname and middle name Estelle.

Lovely! Also shortens to Romy which is cute xxx

Happenchance · 27/02/2022 18:08

I don't like it and I like most other girls names that begin with Ro, including Romina and Ramona.

tiredanddangerous · 27/02/2022 18:10

I would have pronounced it Rom-oh-la if you hadn't given the correct pronunciation.

scottishnames · 27/02/2022 18:12

Romola is a nice name and I know more than one, but they pronounce it 'Rom-o-lah'. as does the Italian speaker on forvo : forvo.com/search/Romola/it/
Where does the 'Rahm' come from?

As well as female version of Romulus, also the heroine of an intriguing George Eliot novel: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Romola

WhoKnowsProbsNotMe · 27/02/2022 18:12

Sorry I don’t like it, I don’t know why but it just sounds to me like the name of some sort of supplement or medication. I much prefer Tabitha or Veronica x

sadpapercourtesan · 27/02/2022 18:12

I think it's lovely, and you would have options for shortenings; Ro, Rosie, Romy, Molly.

BellaVida · 27/02/2022 18:12

I think people might struggle with the pronunciation as it’s not a recognisable name.

What about Romilly?

TheUsualShitshow · 27/02/2022 18:16

I like it, but why would it be pronounced Ramola? Is that the standard pronunciation?

Jeschara · 27/02/2022 18:18

I like it too.

babynamelover · 27/02/2022 18:20

I prefer Ramona but it's pretty I would say it Row-mole-uh.

WaitinginVain · 27/02/2022 18:34

It's beautiful and it's different but I would also pronounce it Ro-mow-luh.

Also like the suggestion from pp for Romy as an abbreviation.

florianfortescue · 27/02/2022 19:05

I love it, and Romilly too. Beautiful names.

Luredbyapomegranate · 27/02/2022 19:43

It’s nice - I think it’s usually ROM-oh-lah though, in English or Italian?? I do think it will get said like that anyway.

Ramona is another good one.

Not mad keen on Estelle - but Stella and Estella are lovely.

poodlepoop · 27/02/2022 19:50

I know a Romola (Italian) who pronounces it Rom-o-la

Not sure how you'd get to your pronunciation

What about Talitha

OverByYer · 27/02/2022 19:56

Its a pretty name but most people will say it as Rome-ola.
I wouldn't think to say it Rahm-ola

toastofthetown · 27/02/2022 22:06

I really like Romola, but also not sure where the Rahm sound comes from. Though I know in some American accents balm and bomb sound the same, so maybe the same kind of thing in your accent. I'd pronounce the first syllable with the same vowel sound as hot.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 27/02/2022 22:08

I think the most famous current bearer (actress Romola Garai) pronounces her name as "Rom- ol- ah" like the George Elliot novel. I think you'll get this pronunciation most often so will have to be prepared to correct it. Lovely name though imo - classy and elegant sounding with some cute nn options if wanted.

Suzyinthesummertime · 27/02/2022 22:09

Sorry hate to say it but if you remember Creamola foam that's what it reminds me of..

Bookaholic73 · 27/02/2022 22:11

Sorry, it’s a no from me. Just reminds me of the Romulans from Star Trek.

CharlotteMJL · 28/02/2022 17:05

Thank you for the input, everyone! Sorry about the pronunciation confusion.... I'm American and like one person said, we say "bomb" like "bahm" and Tom like "Tahm," so I have a feeling when people say it fast here, it will come out more like Rahm-o-la. People here pronounce "Romulus" like "Rahmulus" too. Which is funny because we do pronounce Rome the same way they do in England. Strange!

Love it 😍
I wanted to use this name but couldn’t convince DP !!

TheUsualShitshow · 28/02/2022 18:06

Ahh now it makes sense Smile

I think it's a lovely name.

teezletangler · 03/03/2022 06:38

I actually wouldn't use it OP, considering you're in the US. I live in Canada and I have a Romilly- I hate the way Canadians pronounce her name - RAAAHM-a-lee. People really stretch out that first syllable. Some people also have a hard time with the second syllable and seem to turn it into a two-syllable name- RAHM-lee.

Sometimes I want to move back to the UK just so people will pronounce her name in a more attractive way!
