Hi,
I’m having a baby girl but struggling which name suits my last name the best…

The names i like are Luna and Lyla and last name will be Hedges.

Do these go or would you suggest something different?

Thank you x

I think you want to avoid all the Luna/Lila/Lyra/lara/Lena/Leah/Lola names - there are so many around and they all blur into one.

Also think you’d be better off with 3 syllables with hedges

Delilah Hedges (to keep the Lilah sound)
Annabel Hedges
Marianne Hedges
Eloise Hedges
Jemima Hedges, etc

I think Lara or Lyra are the nicest of the short L names of you do go for them, Luna always makes me think Loony and Lila makes me think of a blow up bed

DramaAlpaca · 23/02/2022 23:15

Lyla in preference to Luna.

Or maybe Lyra or Lara instead?

Cindie943811A · 23/02/2022 23:44

Lucette
Lucille
Lydia

ElIie · 23/02/2022 23:50

I personally like both names but I think of Luna as more of a cat/dog name - there are so many Luna’s at my local dog park.

Lyra is one that someone else has suggested, which is similar but less common (as in not in the top 100 names).

Good luck finding a name for your daughter :)

I think either work with Hedges and both are lovely names but they do seem to be awfully popular atm and she may be one of many in her year group but that may not bother you?

If you like the celestial meaning of Luna how about:
Celeste or Araceli

If you like short L names how about Laura? A currently very underused lovely name. Or Lucia?

Lucia is beautiful

They both sound fine with the surname.

I slightly prefer Lyla but both are nice.

Alcoholfree1 · 24/02/2022 12:26

Lyla delilah or lyra
There are dogs everywhere called luna
Especially frenchies or cockpoos etc…

Eyeofthenorm · 24/02/2022 12:28

Lyla rather than Luna

Luna makes me think of a dog of Luna lovegood

Eyeofthenorm · 24/02/2022 12:28

Or

Easterbunnyiswindowshopping · 24/02/2022 12:30

Surely of late Luna has become a ddog's name?

GeneLovesJezebel · 24/02/2022 12:30

When I hear Luna I think lunatic .

Dreamingof3 · 24/02/2022 12:33

I prefer lyla to luna

Also like the previous suggestions of delilah and lyra

Suprima · 24/02/2022 12:33

I think Layla Hedges sounds nicer, or the Lailah spelling.

This

Not Delilah as that too blurs into all the Lila type names but I''d probably go for a three syllable name not ending in -a
or a short consonant-rich name (not Rose although rose hedges are nice Smile)

Luna H**s will sound like Lunar Edges etc

OrangeAndYellowAndBlue · 24/02/2022 15:15

I love Luna, but I don't think it works with a last name that's a noun, because then it sounds like Lunar Hedges (in my accent).

Obviously Lunar Hedges is meaningless, but it just sounds odd to me.

Lyla works totally fine, but I like it less as a name (personally).

SkyrocketAway · 25/02/2022 18:35

I have a Luna. She is 6 and the only one in her year-group. She's never met another kid with her name yet. I know it's more popular than it used to be. She gets called Lu or Lulu as well.

I love both, but prefer the spelling Lilah. Never met one of those either.

Obviously I am biased.

SkyrocketAway · 25/02/2022 18:37

of Luna lovegood

I think of her too, in fact it's sort of DDs namesake as I fell in love with the name and the character as a teenager. Grin

pictish · 25/02/2022 18:40

Don’t like Lyla. Layla yes, very pretty…Lyla, no. Looks like it’s missing a vowel there somewhere. A misspelling.
Luna is nice. Not as nice as Layla.

pictish · 25/02/2022 18:41

We have a cat called Luna btw. Chosen by the kids. I know three other pet Lucas. 2 dogs and another cat.

pictish · 25/02/2022 18:42

*Lunas

SkyrocketAway · 25/02/2022 18:42

Tbf to some posters, I do call DD Loopy-Lu and Loony-Lu sometimes. The name just works for her though - she loves lemons so LuLuLemon is another nickname Grin I think of my DD whenever I see that brand haha.

Lara is also lovely! It's another name I considered when I was pregnant. Of course I think of Lara Croft, which isn't a bad thing.

Lyra also beautiful.

I really do love the L-a names Blush

pictish · 25/02/2022 18:43

Although having said that we also have a human Oscar and know both cats and dogs called Oscar too. We don’t care.

IsItTooHotInHere · 25/02/2022 18:45

Luna is more of a pet's name (there's 3 cats on my street named Luna).

I like Lola, Layla and Lysette.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 25/02/2022 18:45

Lucy. A lovely name that is overlooked for in favour of the fey and twee names people imagine are unique
