I've been looking for names with the meaning Mercy or Compassion. Just came across Daya and quite like it. Thoughts?

It sounds made-up

GeneLovesJezebel · 19/02/2022 07:21

Reminds me of diarrhoea.

TibetanTerrah · 19/02/2022 07:23

It's pretty but I would research to see where it is commonly used and make sure your pronunciation is spot on. I must admit as an Irish person it does piss me off when people with no connection choose Irish names, especially when they go on to mis-spell or mis-pronounce them.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 19/02/2022 07:40

I like it. I’ve only ever met one. He is of Sikh heritage, and pronounces it “Day-ah”.

Schoolsout78 · 19/02/2022 07:42

There's a vegan cheese brand that's well known Called daiya. Would sound the same

Its both a Sanskrit and Hebrew name. It's pronounced Day-Ah in Sanskrit but I can't find anything that shows the Hebrew pronunciation.

I would assume pronunciation of Dye-Ah. And I would also assume a Latin American background. These assumptions almost certainly are down to my only exposure to the name being Orange is the New Black.

I don’t think it’s a terrible name, but not one I love either.

ZoyaTheDestroyer · 19/02/2022 11:17

The Daya I know is day-a, and of British Asian heritage.

Luredbyapomegranate · 19/02/2022 11:57

@TibetanTerrah The girl on Orange it the new black is called Dayanara, Daya for short.

DropYourSword · 19/02/2022 14:49

Why would you ask 'Thoughts?' when you could have asked "What Daya think?"

MartinMartinMarti · 19/02/2022 14:57

I know a British-Punjabi baby called Deiya, and I love it

meditrina · 19/02/2022 15:31

Daya Wan is a Chinese nuclear power station, so I wouldn't. But I dI realise that's a bit of a niche association!

It's also why I'd pronounce it as Dye-a

I think it’s lovely!

OP - threads like this could be helpful in exposing you to a bunch of peoples favourite names. This particular thread I have linked is hypothetically naming babies in alphabetical order. Or if your taste is more for more alternative or unusual names this thread might be helpful - the concept is names which children would have if the parent had been bolder.
