I have come to like Patience, ( I like the meaning, wanted to be a mum my whole life).

My mum hates it and says it's too religous.

Do you think it is liveable with ?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

@Luredbyapomegranate

Maybe as a middle name if it has meaning to you.

It's a bit of a put-downy-don't-expect-to-much-of-life-missy sort of name. I wouldn't want it. Constance, Faith, Hope - all fine.

Yes. I’m just thinking about it more now. Patience is only ever used in the negative - “you have to be patient” (because you are not being patient). It’s not a word used in it’s positive sense “she’s a great friend, good fun and … patient”? It’s only used when you are NOT patient, if that makes sense!?!
Forgothowmuchlhatehomeschoolin · 17/02/2022 15:51

I think it would be putting pressure on your child ...what if she has none? Bit like when someone miserable is called Joy.
Make a nice middle name though.

Elspethelf · 17/02/2022 17:16

I like Patience but dislike the potential nn Patty. I knew a Patty that I really did not like though so I have that connection. If you love it, it’s a perfectly acceptable name.

ISmellBurnings · 17/02/2022 17:28

I would also make the assumption she was from an African family.

IKeptYouLikeAnOath · 17/02/2022 17:29

I love it 😍

hattie43 · 17/02/2022 17:34

It's an African name

DogsAndGin · 17/02/2022 17:39

@Happenchance

I hate it. It perpetuates the idea that women should be patient. Unfortunately we still live in a world where being impatient is often seen as a strength in men but a negative in women, e.g. an impatient businessman takes no nonsense and gets the job done whereas an impatient businesswoman is a nag/bitch/insert insult in here.

Also, it's the name that Roy and Hayley Cropper gave their daughter in Corrie.

I came here to say exactly this! Would you consider the name Patience for a boy baby?
DogsAndGin · 17/02/2022 17:39

@pigcon1

This is the 21st century - please do not do this.
Totally agree! Bizarre name
Fl0w3ry · 17/02/2022 17:39

I don’t like it. Also it would be funny saying the name of your child if the child turns out to be a stroppy impatient person. And how do you differentiate teaching your child what patience actually is vs her name? I think it would be better as a middle name.

Luredbyapomegranate · 17/02/2022 22:52

Confused it’s a Christian name. Anyway there are better virtues. It’s a no.
DramaAlpaca · 17/02/2022 22:54

It's a no from me.

I do love Constance though.

UserBotLurking9to5 · 17/02/2022 22:54

I agree with your Mum. It's terrible.

flingoo · 17/02/2022 23:47

It's not for me I'm afraid

RainbowMum11 · 18/02/2022 01:33

I liked Patience for me 2nd (DD1 was Constance nn Nancy) but decided against it - I'm very glad I did as she really wouldn't have lived up to her name 🤣🤣

Cbeebiesrehab · 18/02/2022 07:26

I taught a Patience nn Pati. Frightfully posh family. She was a beautiful little thing but I never got my head around the name-always felt a bit daft shouting it out in the line.

UserBotLurking9to5 · 18/02/2022 07:44

Met a tempi, short for temperence, she lived in the biggest nicest old rectory house in the town!! I think temperence means not drinking. She was Irish and very posh, and RICH which is the winning combo

ToniLaRoni · 18/02/2022 09:21

Agree on that if I saw a Patience on a class list or DC told me they have a girl called Patience in their class then I'd very much expect to be meeting a black child with parents who grew up in Africa.

Which isn't the reason id say it's a definite no. As plenty of other names that African friends of mine have are lovely.

But it's the make/female patience divide that's the issue. Sit down, be quite, be patient, be obedient you're a girl.

Happenchance · 18/02/2022 09:52

You could call her a name that means longed for, such as Wilona or Mia. Then her name is about her rather than you, but still implies that you have wanted to be a mother a long time.

SaticoyStreet · 19/02/2022 14:49

There was a girl called Patience who posted in a fb group I’m in earlier today. She made a post about being impatient about something, it’s was hilariously ironic 😂 people pointed out the irony and she said she’s always been so impatient.

Honestly I can’t stand it

Iamtheweedonkey · 19/02/2022 14:54

Had a friend in the 80's called Patience, she absolutely hated her name, she changed it at 14 to her middle name. Don't do it.

Rosieposie101 · 19/02/2022 15:37
