Partner like the name 'EsMay'
What is the correct spelling? Not 'EsMee'

Esmae
Esme

Will she forever be correcting spelling and pronounciation?

Esme, in the UK.

It's the French male spelling I think, but you could say the same about Jean.

aintnospringchicken · 15/02/2022 19:25

Esme

heldinadream · 15/02/2022 19:32

Properly it would be Esmé with the acute accent on the second e giving the sound you're after.

babyjellyfish · 15/02/2022 19:36

It's Esmée in France but I would probably go with Esme in the UK.

themental · 15/02/2022 19:59

Esme

StopForAMinute · 15/02/2022 20:09

Esme.

TruffleShuffles · 15/02/2022 20:12

Esme is the correct spelling but I’ve met an equal number of Es-me’s and Es-may’s who both spell their name as Esme. I think the name just leads to a lifetime of correcting mispronunciation whichever way you go.

Redsquirrel5 · 15/02/2022 21:09

Esme my children went to school with one.

Yes, I thought this may be the case and is definitely something I want to avoid!

It's short for Esmeralda, so Esme.

@groovergirl

It's short for Esmeralda, so Esme.
Er, no it isn’t. It’s a name in its own right. And can be male or female.
groovergirl · 17/02/2022 04:11

Looked up Esme on Wikipedia and you're right, @Nutsohazelnuts. I'd always thought it was exclusively a Spanish name (have a South American friend named Esmeralda nn Esme) but it's also French and means "esteemed".

Wiki even has a list of Scotsmen named Esme. Wow!

Blubells · 17/02/2022 09:22

Esmé or Esmay

Esme is Es-mee

RuthW · 17/02/2022 15:08

Esmae.

I say Esme as Ezmee

Cas112 · 17/02/2022 15:12

Esme

Cas112 · 17/02/2022 15:12

@Cas112

Esmé*

Esmae makes the spelling crystal clear in English!
