What do you think? Any associations or general thoughts?

For our first baby- it's worked it's way to the top of the list as both my partners and my second choice over Rosa (me) and Georgina (him).
Very comfortable with Beth for short.

Personally I love it (and Rosa!) but wondered if it felt too 80s? I also wasn’t sold on Beth so gave up on the thought. I’d have Bryony but sounds wrong with our surname and have considered Romilly too.

Cinnabomb · 14/02/2022 14:34

I love it. I’m thinking of using it too. I think it was fairly popular the 90s tho so might be a few 20 something bethanys about, if that bothers you.

babyjellyfish · 14/02/2022 14:40

I think it's a nice name. I prefer Rosa though!

JuneySunshine · 14/02/2022 14:43

Thanks @Lissie87

Oh Snap @Cinnabomb ! I do think it's in that nice category of known of but not common.

As you say, had a look on the ONS seems to have peaked in the late 80s/ early 90s then use really dropped off. I'm a 1989 baby myself and don't know any/ remember any from childhood. But very interested if other people feel it's dated. We actually got to Bethany via Elizabeth- as I like Beth but Lizzie not so much.

@babyjellyfish Thanks, and me too Sad but doesn't seem to be a goer with my partner and I think I need to get over it.

We have a beth, hardly meet any others so won't be one of many in school etc, suited her as a baby, still does as she's getting older. Come across Beth/Bethany occasionally at work so not common as young adults either

Buddhabowl · 14/02/2022 15:05

I prefer both Rosa and Georgina, but I do like Bethany, particularly Beth. I think Beth is such a lovely classic but Bethany less so, feels a bit dated. But if I loved it I wouldn't let that stop me using it.

irishfarmer · 14/02/2022 15:13

I really like it. I have an auntie Betty, and just realised I don't actually know her full name it may be Bethany for all I know (doubtful born in Ireland 1940s).

JemimaTiggywinkle · 14/02/2022 15:16

I love Bethany - same as you, I like Beth but not Lizzie/Elizabeth so much.

Liverbird77 · 14/02/2022 15:33

I prefer Bethan but it's perfectly fine.

KylieCharlene · 14/02/2022 15:37

I think it's dated- sorry. Sounds a bit wet.
Beth alone is preferable Bethany.
Rosa is lovely and Georgina is nice although I prefer the similar (to me) Georgia.

JuneySunshine · 14/02/2022 15:48

Hmm, bit mixed then! I'd be happy if they came to use Beth permanently but think they'd be better to have the option.

I lived in Wales for a while and can't hear Bethan without imagining a strong Welsh accent which puts me off a bit (despite loving Wales and the accent, we're just not Welsh).

I know a Bethany in her 20s - she’s known as Beth, Bethie or Betty. I like it.

CharlieBoo · 14/02/2022 16:20

Beth is lovely.. Bethany is a bit dated sounding.. Rosa is much nicer though (sorry not helpful)

BowerOfBramble · 14/02/2022 16:21

Bethany is a Biblical placename, so if that counts as dated...

Yika · 14/02/2022 16:23

I love it, it’s pretty and soft-sounding. I prefer it to Bethan, Rosa or Georgina.

RuthW · 14/02/2022 16:36

Very old fashioned in my opinion. I don't like it. Sorry

CornishGem1975 · 14/02/2022 16:38

Beth is lovely. Bethany sounds a bit Eastenders.

Lou857 · 14/02/2022 16:38

I love it!! My top name but sadly we have surname O and I am too worried about intitals being BO and little girly being bullied!

Penvelopey · 14/02/2022 16:50

I absolutely love it

SpaghettiArmsMurderer · 14/02/2022 16:57

I love Beth but I’m not as keen on Bethany. What about Elizabeth with Beth as the nn?

LittlePearl · 14/02/2022 17:03

I prefer Bethan

Kite22 · 14/02/2022 17:03

I really like it Smile

IrishMamaMia · 14/02/2022 17:05

It was on my list for girls but I ended up preferring Elizabeth. I do think it's a classic, elegant name though and Beth is beautiful.

TatianaBis · 14/02/2022 17:30

To me it's dated and provincial, much prefer your other choices. Rosa is lovely.
