Not Claudie

I’m unexpectedly pregnant with #2 and I’m trying to focus on names to help me get excited.

Can anyone suggest French girl names that end in ie? Not Amelie. If possible a bit more unusual. Two syllables or maybe three.

I really love Claudie but not the meaning (lame/crippled) so something similar would be nice.

I know not French but I also really like Maely… So I guess wildcard suggestions welcome too.

Thank you all. I did wonder about Leonie but felt there were too many possible pronunciations.

Why are you after a French name, OP? Do you just like them, or do you plan to live in France?

I only ask because I think names ending in "ie" might be a bit dated now in France.

I know women my age called Amélie, Elodie, Mélodie, Aurelie, Anne-Sophie, Emilie, Mélanie, Eugénie, Lucie, Marie, Ophélie, Nathalie and Valérie, but they were all born in the 80s.

Some, such as Sylvie, are more like 1960s names.

And quite a few of these names have an acute accent in as well, so you would need to decide whether you wanted to do that as well.

Of the names that have been suggested already in this thread, Léonie is probably the most contemporary, and one of my favourites as well.

Some aren't quite correct; "Tiphanie", for example, is actually Tiphaine (pronounced sort of like Tiff-enne) and quite different to Tiffany in English.

If you want a name which is more contemporary in France, here are some of the most popular names at the moment.

Not many "ie" names! Names ending in "a" are actually much more fashionable right now.

This might not bother you at all, but just wanted to point it out.

I would probably also avoid names such as Maïlys/Maëlys/Anaïs.

Strictly speaking, you need the accent in order for the name to spell the sound you are supposed to pronounce, and those umlauts are an absolute pain to type. (I just had an intern called Maïlys for the last six months and I had to copy and paste her name every time to spell it correctly.)

Also, Maëlys is currently strongly associated with child who was murdered a few years ago, so for me it gives off Madeleine McCann vibes.

If it helps I have a Claudia and can't say the meaning has ever bothered me/us. It's just irrelevant and not something we dwell on and certainly no one has ever commented on the meaning as people just don't know about meamings. So if you love Claudie then go for it, don't let the meaning bother you.

I would avoid Maëly(s), no one will pronounce it right.
Coralie, Marie, Sophie? I also like Nathalie, a bit dated but I like the song Grin

KirstenBlest · 14/02/2022 16:23

I agree with the pp that some of the names are dated in France. Sylvie, Nathalie and Amelie would be in their 40s or 50s

I’m not a big fan of -ie ending names full stop.

My current fav French names are:

Manon
Capucine
Romane
Apolline
Ninon
Philomène

I agree Maëlys would be a pia in the U.K. which is why I asked where OP was based. I have easy access to accents on my iPad which I’m now on but not on my pc - which is standard. Here Maëlys would end up as Mayliss.

McScreamysGhostPants · 14/02/2022 17:09

I absolutely adore the name Sabine. I just love it!

Another vote for Manon, also love Camille. Inès is sweet too.

Interesting that Louise, Emma, Alice and Rose are in the top 10 French names and the UK list features Olivia, Amelia and Isabella,
