Does anyone else love the American surname type names?

I do but I feel so alone in this. I'm a big fan of names like Hunter, Hudson, Ryder, Wilder, Sullivan etc.

If you're a fan what are your favourites?

My DS is Hudson.

anothernamedoesntsmellsosweet · 13/02/2022 14:47

I love Fletcher and Cooper. If I had a boy he would be Fletcher

TatianaBis · 13/02/2022 15:01

I absolutely hate them. They're fine in the US where they sound natural. Here they just sound contrived, wannabe and downmarket.

canarycages · 13/02/2022 15:58

DS2 is Bellamy. I've always known it as a French boy's name (DS1 also has a French name). Apparently, it's also an American surname... no regrets, though. I love it just as much as I did when I first heard it years ago.

TatianaBis · 13/02/2022 16:07

It's not a French boy's name. Bel-ami is a sort of epithet either literal or ironic.

Orphlids · 13/02/2022 16:09

I grudgingly admit I do think some of them sound quite cool, but the snob in me does think they’re generally absolutely DREADFUL and thoroughly non-U. I find myself expecting a child with one of these names to be badly behaved. I’ve been proved wrong so often, but it remains my first impression every time I hear them.

ZoyaTheDestroyer · 13/02/2022 16:17

IME they only work with certain surnames. I recently encountered a Jackson Harrison and there was major confusion over which was his surname.

I think they sound quite cool in the US with an American accent and a backdrop of the snowy mountains:

Colt
Wilder
Blaze
Carson
Dallas
Chase
Truman

They sound very different the cold English drizzle. Particularly with a London accent:

Colt = Cowlt
Wilder = Woildah
Truman = Trumern

Madison = Madisern
Harper = Hawpah
Dakota = Dak' o' ah

Haven't tried Brummie, Manc, Scouse, Geordie etc - suspect the effect would be similar.

PamelaDoov · 13/02/2022 16:57

I agree that most of them sound so much nicer and cooler when said with an American accent. Unfortunately my son will get called ‘udson a lot.

ShowOfHands · 13/02/2022 17:02

I do think there remains an association with them still. If not American, I think a lot of people assume a certain socioeconomic status attached to them. I wonder if this will slowly change though as I do meet more of them as time goes on and not just the stereotype you're seeing described on here.

Downmarket 😂 anyone that’s says downmarket is trying too hard!

I love them OP - especially Piper and Brooke for girls

Dontforgetyourbrolly · 13/02/2022 17:05

Yes !
Spencer
Clark
Cooper

KylieCharlene · 13/02/2022 17:06

Clayton is the only one I like.

IsThePopeCatholic · 13/02/2022 17:09

No, I don’t see the point of them. Unless you’re a cowboy of course.

ouch321 · 13/02/2022 17:09

No sorry not at all

Karmakamelion · 13/02/2022 17:09

Lobe the name Bentley

Lol, why not tell us what you really think!

I went to school with a kid called John John, if that’s any use. As in first name John, surname John.

17caterpillars1mouse · 13/02/2022 17:37

I only like a few

Wyatt
Everett
Sullivan

17caterpillars1mouse · 13/02/2022 17:38

Actually I could get behind Fletcher too and think Thatcher would be lovely if it wasn't so strongly associated with Maggie (I'm not a Tory)

TheAnswerIsDontThinkAboutIt · 13/02/2022 17:48

Not keen on all of them, but I've always liked Jefferson, for some reason.

PamelaDoov · 13/02/2022 17:55

I’m trying to get DH to approve Wyatt or Everett for our next one!
MsTSwift · 13/02/2022 18:37

Fine if you are American otherwise agree with Orphelids I’m afraid I think snobbish thoughts I am not proud of

GucciBear · 13/02/2022 18:40

Dreadful idea.

AyeEee123 · 13/02/2022 18:43

All four of mine have names that could be considered surnames. I love them! Sullivan was my favourite for one but we went with dh choice instead. Could never imagine choosing a top 20 name as I find them incredibly dull and names like Alfie, Ernie etc aren’t my thing either.

Footsanitiser · 13/02/2022 18:45

I've got friends with kids called
Bailey
Baxter
Blake
Harrison
Mallory
Miller
Spencer

All of which I think are OK. But I don't like Kennedy as a first name
