I do but I feel so alone in this. I'm a big fan of names like Hunter, Hudson, Ryder, Wilder, Sullivan etc.

If you're a fan what are your favourites?

Aaah I do! Wyatt, Wilder, Colton, Jameson, Jackson, Brooks, Bennett… all the cowboy type names.

Mushypeasandchipstogo · 13/02/2022 21:33

Sorry no, I think that they are hideous.

Strokethefurrywall · 13/02/2022 21:33

And virtually no one in Ireland is calling their children Cassidy and Sullivan, for the same reason Brits aren’t calling their children Jones or Patel.

What does that matter? I don’t really care what people in Ireland are calling their children. Or will we get in trouble with the naming police if we dare to name our children something different?

AndAllOurYesterdays · 13/02/2022 21:36

I know a family with two little boys Archer and Hunter and a very posh granny who sounds hilarious shouting down the street after them.

Mrstwiddle · 13/02/2022 21:36

I don’t like them at all. Lots of people with names like this in Canada where I live, Cassidy is a name that Is used by male and females here. I don’t know, it would just seem really out of place in England.

Rococococo · 13/02/2022 21:37

Hate them, absolutely hate them. Nothing to do with social class, they just sound ugly to me. I don’t think they sound any better on Americans either.

FartnissEverbeans · 13/02/2022 21:37

@Luredbyapomegranate

I quite like some of them. Surname names are still a thing in Scotland (often m’s maiden name or other family name), and it used to be more common in England in 18/19th centuries.

However, I think a lot of the current crop will end up being classed as naughty boys names, so some parents may end up regretting it.

This! I’ve known Scottish guys with names like Wilson and Forbes.

I quite like some of the more modern ones like Hudson and Wilder, but they wouldn’t work in my family. It would feel out of place somehow. Maybe pretentious? I’m not sure that’s quite the right word

Ours is Hunter and we are not American. My OH is from Newcastle and I love it.

RosieCockle · 13/02/2022 21:40

Dreadful.

Synchrony · 13/02/2022 21:41

I like some but hate others, although that's generally not because they are surnames.

I like Harrison (have a friend called this), Clark (makes me think of Clark Gable), Cassidy (I like the actress Cassidy Janson) for example.

I don't like Cooper (makes me think of Whooping cough), Harper ("don't harp on about it"), or Mackenzie (I hate all "Mac" names. So ugly sounding to me).

Classica · 13/02/2022 21:42

@Orphlids

I grudgingly admit I do think some of them sound quite cool, but the snob in me does think they’re generally absolutely DREADFUL and thoroughly non-U. I find myself expecting a child with one of these names to be badly behaved. I’ve been proved wrong so often, but it remains my first impression every time I hear them.
the MN obsession with what's U and non-U is sphincter puckering.

The Mitfords were a mess, you don't need to try and emulate them.

elQuintoConyo · 13/02/2022 21:42

My son is called Mulder. Does that count?

UpDownRound · 13/02/2022 21:52

@Malariahilaria

Settling in to have my DCs named insulted yet again 🤣. Honestly I just wanted names that weren't Jack, Freddie, Henry, Sam, Oliver or George, not because they're not lovely names but just because there are three of them in every class.
They're really not. In 10 years I've taught one Freddie and one Jack. None of the others. Neither of my children is at nursery with any of the names mentioned. The 'there will be three in every class' is always really overstated on mumsnet. The most popular names are more like 1 in 100 than 1 in 10.

I really like the names Kennedy and Fletcher but just don't think they work in Britain sadly. I know a Lincoln. It makes me think of the flat fields of Lincolnshire which are, with respect, not the most inspiring place.

Not for me, sorry they're horrible

nutellingyou · 13/02/2022 22:19

I really dislike the ones like Peyton, Riley (especially if turned into Rylee/Ryleigh) and Grayson but I do like Hudson. I know an Archer and a Hunter who definitely suit their names and don't sound too American.

JenniferWooley · 13/02/2022 22:49

@Skeam

Awful. And I don’t get the people who seem to think they’re the only alternatives to top ten names — there are a lot of names out there.

And virtually no one in Ireland is calling their children Cassidy and Sullivan, for the same reason Brits aren’t calling their children Jones or Patel.

Thank god I went with an old family name then which my actual Irish in Ireland family love.

He's also the only boy given the name in Scotland between 2000 & 2018 so nowhere near the top 10 names although that wasn't a consideration when naming him.

Ahaha this is such an English MN-y response Grin
narcdad · 13/02/2022 22:59

I really don't like them, in my dd's class we have
Cooper
Harper
Jayla
Hudson
Blake
Riley
Hadley

Palmfrond · 13/02/2022 23:22

@Strokethefurrywall

I have a Sullivan, he’s nearly 8. Older brother is Carter (10). We’re British (H is Scottish) but haven’t lived in UK in 15 years, where we live is multicultural and much less snobbery around names here.

On our lists (for boys and girls) we’re also:
Ellis
Lachlan
Piper
Harper
Elliott
Maverick
Griffin
Dalton

I personally love surnames as first names (obviously).

My brother was a Spencer and H is Fraser. So lots of surnames for first names in our family generally.

Maverick?? Like in Top Gun?
RobertSmithsLipstick · 13/02/2022 23:24

I don't like them at all.

Strokethefurrywall · 14/02/2022 00:34

@Palmfrond - yep, Maverick like in Top Gun.

We didn’t go with it ultimately as I was stuck on Sullivan, but I know of 2 little Mavericks, one is 3, the other is 6 months. It’s a cracking name!

DramaAlpaca · 14/02/2022 00:43

I'm generally not keen on this style of names at all.

There are two I quite like and they are Lincoln and Blake. I wouldn't use them myself, but I like them.

AuntTwacky · 14/02/2022 00:44

Hate them
