Does anyone else love the American surname type names?

I do but I feel so alone in this. I'm a big fan of names like Hunter, Hudson, Ryder, Wilder, Sullivan etc.

If you're a fan what are your favourites?

Really tacky. I just don't see the appeal.

iklboo · 13/02/2022 18:47

I do love Sullivan.

SummerInSun · 13/02/2022 18:57

Like PP, unless you are American and the name is meaningful to your family (eg mother's or grandmother's maiden name), I would say honestly on an anonymous forum what I couldn't say in real life but which I bet a lot of people think, which is that they are "white trash names".

Nosnogginginthekitchen · 13/02/2022 19:01

You could get away with some, Cameron, for example, is in this vein but still used commonly as a first name here.

Malariahilaria · 13/02/2022 19:01

Settling in to have my DCs named insulted yet again 🤣. Honestly I just wanted names that weren't Jack, Freddie, Henry, Sam, Oliver or George, not because they're not lovely names but just because there are three of them in every class.

MsPavlichenko · 13/02/2022 19:02

Has always been a thing in Scotland. My DP has his mum’s maiden name but is a common first name too.

Nadjahomesoil · 13/02/2022 19:06

I'm not a fan personally.

LynetteScavo · 13/02/2022 19:06

Some I like, some I don't.

That her and Fletcher aren't my cup
If yea, but I like Hudson, Phelps, and Cooper is growing on me. I couldn't use them for my DSs though-

fragglerockette · 13/02/2022 19:10

I love them!
I have a Lincoln, and lots of these names were on our list. I didn't want him to be one of 4 kids with the same name in his class.

BOOTS52 · 13/02/2022 19:16

A few of them sound ok but the Sullivan one is awful as just see that as an Irish surname and it is too long. When I hear the name Wyatt I just think of a hillbilly. Some are good but most sound pretentious. Equally weird here is when a person is given a first name that is nearly the same as the surname as in. David McDavis or Philip Philips... But each person should choose what they like for their child. I do like Hudson as it has a lovely sound to it and also like Austin.
When I hear the name Hunter I just think of the young office guy that Michael's girlfriend in the office had an affair with. Awful name.

Ginger1982 · 13/02/2022 19:18

Some are fine. Others just sound ridiculous.

sometimespeopletakethepiss · 13/02/2022 19:18

@TatianaBis

I absolutely hate them. They're fine in the US where they sound natural. Here they just sound contrived, wannabe and downmarket.
😂
ArtemisDarling · 13/02/2022 19:20

Agree with the naming of surname as first name as well. I had a second cousin called Anthony Anthony. Hmm

Otherwise, not over keen on surname type names but that said i love Fletcher and Elliot (if that counts) and have a nephew Archer which I also like alot.

BOOTS52 · 13/02/2022 19:22

Tatiana your answer so right and very funny.

The name Harper just reminds me of toilet cleaner and Baxter of soup. The thing with names such a person thing and my son has an usual name not common but not pretentious either. Sometimes we like a name and then we think of someone with that name and it turns us off. No one wants to have the same name as few others in the class but think Hudson and Austin my favourite.

IcedCokeFloat · 13/02/2022 19:31

Has always been a thing in Scotland. My DP has his mum’s maiden name but is a common first name too.

I thought of that after posting. It isn't that uncommon to meet someone here with a first name that's more commonly used as a surname.

would say honestly on an anonymous forum what I couldn't say in real life but which I bet a lot of people think, which is that they are "white trash names".

Actually some surname type names are considered to be very "preppy" names in the U.S and not seen as "White trash" (What an awful term)

It's nice to see that some others love them and there are some great names mentioned here.

Trolleedollee · 13/02/2022 19:41

I think they’re dreadful

JenniferWooley · 13/02/2022 19:46

DS has a surname typically used for girls in the US as a forename.

It's an Irish name (as is his actual surname) & I have Irish heritage which were the reasons for choosing his name, we also considered using my mums maiden name but it didn't have the Irish connection we wanted.

Luredbyapomegranate · 13/02/2022 20:53

I quite like some of them. Surname names are still a thing in Scotland (often m’s maiden name or other family name), and it used to be more common in England in 18/19th centuries.

However, I think a lot of the current crop will end up being classed as naughty boys names, so some parents may end up regretting it.

ufucoffee · 13/02/2022 21:16

No. They are confusing when you seen them written as to which is the surname.

sadandcrazy · 13/02/2022 21:20

Not my cup of tea but they aren't uncommon so plenty people must like them.

FuggyPidding · 13/02/2022 21:23

I know a Wilson and a Fletcher.

I quite like these names though not sure I'd be brave enough to use them!

I like Grayson.

KineticSand · 13/02/2022 21:23

My American in laws know a little boy named Satchel as his first name. It's brilliant and awful at the same time!

Skeam · 13/02/2022 21:24

Awful. And I don’t get the people who seem to think they’re the only alternatives to top ten names — there are a lot of names out there.

And virtually no one in Ireland is calling their children Cassidy and Sullivan, for the same reason Brits aren’t calling their children Jones or Patel.

Strokethefurrywall · 13/02/2022 21:28

I have a Sullivan, he’s nearly 8. Older brother is Carter (10).
We’re British (H is Scottish) but haven’t lived in UK in 15 years, where we live is multicultural and much less snobbery around names here.

On our lists (for boys and girls) we’re also:
Ellis
Lachlan
Piper
Harper
Elliott
Maverick
Griffin
Dalton

I personally love surnames as first names (obviously).

My brother was a Spencer and H is Fraser. So lots of surnames for first names in our family generally.
