Hello,

We are due our 2nd boy in a couple of weeks. I love the name Sonny but my DH isn’t keen on it being his actual name and would rather use it as a nickname.

What do you think of the name Edison but mostly using the nickname Sonny?

Thanks!

I don't really like it, but I'm not into the surname as given name trend generally. However, it isn't horrid and, AFAIK, there isn't a negative connotation with the name which means you shouldn't use it. The two associations I have are:
Thomas Edison, perhaps making it a big name to live up to
Edison Device created by Theranos - not great, but also probably fairly niche.

No names will have universal appeal, so as long as you and your DH both like it, I can't see why not.

Susu49 · 11/02/2022 12:22

I love it

SierraHotelIndiaTango · 11/02/2022 12:36

Sorry but I instantly thought lightbulb

seekinglondonlife · 11/02/2022 12:38

I think it's really nice. The men I know with this name originate from African countries, so maybe it is common there.

TatianaBis · 11/02/2022 12:41

I don't like either Edison or Sonny, sorry.

But if you want him to be called Sonny then call him that. Otherwise will be Edison at schools, official docs, unless you put him down as Sonny.

duvetdayforeveryone · 11/02/2022 12:43

I love Edison, but I'd use the nickname Eddy.

SittingOvation · 11/02/2022 12:46

I like it.

MeatPieWoman · 11/02/2022 12:46

Thomas Edison was quite a dodgy character.

I don't really like any surnames as first names and Sonny reminds me of the Godfather.

MinglingFlamingo · 11/02/2022 12:51

Edison Lighthouse is a local landmark so that's what springs to mind

Edison lightbulb fitting

Sorry not that keen

HerRoyalNotness · 11/02/2022 12:52

I really like it, had it on my list and suggested it to someone who did use it

Luredbyapomegranate · 11/02/2022 13:00

It's better than just calling him Sonny, but I'm not mad about it.

Mo1911 · 11/02/2022 13:07

Neither to be honest. Edison is lightbulbs or the lighthouse and Sonny is Sonny Jim or something equally wishy washy. I know a Sonny in his 70's and he's always hated his name.

emmathedilemma · 11/02/2022 13:12

I think it's awful (Sonny too!), very red neck American sort of name to me.

TatianaBis · 11/02/2022 13:15

Sort of red neck Essex.

BunnyRuddington · 11/02/2022 13:17

I love it.

Isn't Edison Lighthouse a band (www.edison-lighthouse.com/), and Eddystone Lighthouse the navigation aid (www.trinityhouse.co.uk/lighthouses-and-lightvessels/eddystone-lighthouse)?
Vickles20 · 11/02/2022 13:46

Edison is ok. But I can suggest Ellison.

Orphlids · 11/02/2022 21:04

I know a gorgeous little Edison. His mum is just the most fantastic woman - charismatic, intelligent, funny, confident, self-deprecating, knowledgeable and beautiful. She’s not remotely red-neck, she’s rather well to do. So I have a positive impression of the name. I think it’s quite cool, it’s certainly not boring, but neither is it bonkers. I’m not a fan of Sonny, I’m afraid though.

DramaAlpaca · 12/02/2022 03:27

It sounds like the name of a Brazilian footballer. I don't mind Edison, but really dislike Sonny.

KirstenBlest · 12/02/2022 11:24

Edison is a surname.

Call him Sonny if that's what you intend to call him day-to-day, but he'll probably be a father and grandfather one day.

Solomon is nice and would shorten to Solly or Sonny

I know a Sunny and he's Sunday on his BC

jimmyreckon · 12/02/2022 11:32

I think you were a football fan of the Manchester variety (red or sky blue)

Thecurtainsofdestiny · 12/02/2022 11:35

I also associate it with the Theranos debacle.
