They are everywhere. I have never heard of this name before and now there's loads, all sorts of ages. In my toddlers group at music class, in my DDs reception class and other at Gymnastics. My new neighbours across the road have a school age one.

Is this really popular and I've just been in a cupboard ? Or am I in a Lilah hotspot ?

Everywhere is a Lily/Lila/Lilah hotspot. 😼

LuckyAmy1986 · 09/02/2022 15:38

Never met one!

canarycages · 09/02/2022 15:42

I knew a woman called Delilah who went by Lilah, and I know a little girl with the name but spelt Leila. I'd say it's pretty popular.

scottishnames · 09/02/2022 15:44

Lilah = within top 200 names -252 babies born 2020
Lila = around top 250 names - 184 babies born in 2020
So not wildly popular, but much more popular now than (say) 20 years ago.
Figures for England and Wales from names.darkgreener.com/#lila

There's also Lilah-Mae, Lila-Rose, Lila-Grace etc.

scottishnames · 09/02/2022 15:57

canarycages has reminded me about Leila and Delilah

Leila ranked 200 in 2020, with 247 babies in England and Wales
Delilah (suddenly very popular) ranked 62 in 2020, with 801 babies in England and Wales.
Source *darkgreenernames8 as above.
So, taking them all together - and adding in a few more for hyphenated Grace, Rae, May etc - that's getting on for 1500 babies with a name that sounds like Lilah in 2020 in England and Wales.

abiirthdaycake · 09/02/2022 16:05

My cat is a Lila, it's a great name!

spiderlight · 09/02/2022 17:01

The last two baby girls I know are both called Lyla.

scottishnames · 09/02/2022 17:32

Gosh, spiderlight another variation! Or two!!

There were 50 babies named Lyla registered in England and Wales in 2020, but 517 named Lilah.

And quite a few hyphenated, with or without the final 'h': Mae/May/Mai, Grace, Rae, Ann, Louise, Blu, Belle etc

So the running total is now over 2000 babies with 'Lilah'-type names.

scottishnames · 09/02/2022 17:32

Should be 'Lylah' - sorry.

@TatianaBis

Everywhere is a Lily/Lila/Lilah hotspot. 😼
And Lena/Lara/Leila/Lyra/Lola/Leah

It’s v dull

TempsPerdu · 09/02/2022 22:07

I know a couple of Lila/Lyla/Lilahs. And also loads of Lilys, Lolas, Laras, Lunas, Laylas, Lias, Lyras…

So I think the Lilah thing you’re suddenly noticing is just part of the wider trend for short, vowel heavy girls’ names beginning with L. People picking a particular sound they like and running with it. When you notice it you really notice it! Smile (There’s also the Evie/Eve/Evelyn/Eva/Ava/Ada/Ida trend that’s been going for a while.)

EishetChayil · 09/02/2022 22:53

Lyla reminds me of Jodie Marsh's bulldog, sister of Paddy.
