These are my top three names for dd no2. Her sister is called Primrose (nn Posy). Our surname begins with P and is 2 syllables.

  1. Artemis (nn Artie)
  2. Penelope (nn Penny)
  3. Dorothy (nn Dottie/Dotty)

What do prefer?

Hebe would get called heebie jeebie. all the time.

StrychnineIntheSandwiches · 05/02/2022 12:36

I like Hera though

greenteafiend · 05/02/2022 16:44

Minerva?

EishetChayil · 05/02/2022 18:02

Artemis is extremely pretentious. Penelope is one of those previously posh names that's gone chav. Dorothy is a granny name, but not in a good way/

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 05/02/2022 18:21

Not keen on the sound of Hebe sorry (despite the plant association - but then I don't like the sound of similar popular Phoebe either).

Hera is nice though, simple and unusual - a bit like my fave Gaia in style. I'd also possibly consider Ianthe or Cassia if you like classical names with botanical links.

Chichimcgee · 05/02/2022 18:26

I’m sticking with Juniper and Primrose sorry Grin

Isonthecase · 05/02/2022 18:50

Hera is a good one although I think Calliope is also good, especially if you like Penelope already. What about Ariadne?

PraiseBee · 05/02/2022 19:41

I love the name Penelope but I have recently met a Dotty and it was divine on that little girl

Elspethelf · 05/02/2022 20:39

You names speak to me! I don’t think sibling names need to go together. Artemis is lovely

PurpleFadesToGreen · 05/02/2022 22:49

Heather?
Hetty for short?

I like Calliope, Callie too.

Bravoecholima · 05/02/2022 22:52

I like Artemis but would shorten to Temi

rachelrainbow · 06/02/2022 18:15

Soooo many options. I am due this week and so unsure.

Confused

I like Dorothy and Penelope but prefer Dot and Nell as the nicknames, especially when paired with Posy. I know of fewer babies and children named Dorothy than I do Penelope at the moment.

Thanks everyone!!

I think we’re going to just go with our fave and name baby girl Artemis - nn Misty!

I've never seen so much love for Artemis here! Gives me hope for the future (it's in my top 2). Best wishes OP, you have stunning taste in names!

TatianaBis · 07/02/2022 21:35

Congrats OP! I’ve got an Artemis so clearly I think it’s the right choice.

She gets called Mimi and Missy. We tried Temi but it didn’t stick and Arti sounds absurd.

Surprised by the positivity here, it’s generally fairly conservative.

rachelrainbow · 07/02/2022 21:49

Ahhh another Artemis mummy! My husband kissed my bump and called her Mimi earlier and it was so sweet! Thanks so much x

Unless you plan to privately educate I can see a lot of teasing install for an Artemis. Hearty Arty, Farty Arty, maybe as a middle name. I don't dislike it, and I think Arti as a name is very cute for a small child, and elegant for an adult. But the ribbing you are setting her up for is massive. Sorry OP, plenty of other great classical names out there but given children take the piss out any slightly unusual name it would be a hard no from me.

rachelrainbow · 07/02/2022 21:50

And Posy and Mimi sound good together 😍

They do 👍🏼
TatianaBis · 07/02/2022 21:55

There’s no name that can’t be rhymed with or turned into something rude.

Even basic names - Matt - Scat, Leo - Peeo, Lucas - Pukas etc, Ellie - Smelly, Eva - Beaver.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 07/02/2022 22:38

Agree with TatianaBis that even common names can be teased - I'm considering very popular William for DS as it's a family name I really love (on another thread) and a couple of people have mentioned "Willy" teasing - even though there must have been gazillions of William's over the years!

Lovely Artemis would only be an issue if a DC is super shy imo (for instance if she's uncomfortable when introducing herself to people, since it's a uncommon name) - but then Primrose isn't exactly top 100 popular yet either, and I'm sure OP considered that.

MyLifeNow20 · 07/02/2022 22:38

I dont like Artemis but love Dorothy, my DD was nearly Dorothy but we went with Delilah. I also love Primrose x

GreekGod · 07/02/2022 22:40

Dorothy - gift from God

MyLifeNow20 · 07/02/2022 22:41

Is Artemis a boys name? How do you get Mimi or Missy from that?
Only asking because I asked for a NN for my dD and everyone said no!
